Future of TXR Site
« on: November 25, 2008, 12:06:20 PM »

As some/all of you know, our website is hosted and paid for by VTXOA.  That will be changing very soon.  I spoke with LaMont (the VTXOA Admin) on the phone the other day.  They are consolidating servers and TXR is one site that is taking up too much room.

I spoke with Tapper last night and we're going to try and get the server moved asap, if not this weekend.  We may have a provider that we can move the database too.  As for cost, that's an unknown at this point.

Tapper mentioned that the domain name will be expiring soon as well.  So, I'm quite excited that everything is happening at once. ::)

I will try and keep everyone posted as it gets closer.

When you talk to him again, we need the pic posting mechanisms on the site and in the gallery fixed. I know that is a slight worry, but, hey... how often can you get ahold of Tapper? ;D

If you need any admin assistance, i can lend a hand.  what are the bandwidth, database size, and file size requirements??

I have never heard what kind of bandwidth we take up or the file size of the database uncompressed.  Zipped up, Tapper said it should only be a few mb which is pretty small.

I've been checking out Dot Easy and wanted to call and see what they had to say.  For $10 they seem to have a pretty good plan.  http://www.doteasy.com/Services/WebHosting/Unlimited/

A few ideas from someone who knows nothing about these things. Take any good ones ignore the rest.
1 Put the control of the site in the name of the site, in such a way, that any member of the board can do what needs to be done.
2 Get one of our members who is a 1st class geek on the board.
3 Put in a place for people to go and be ugly to each other, We need that. No porn but, Let the key board commandos fight it out.
we are bro's, and I personally would not pull the plug, until one of them used the word lawyer. If they want to scrap, let em, tha's how best friends are made.
4 Put in a porn section, guarded some how, so the site is safe for work, but, can be shared by those who enjoy that.
5 Make a list of time share property and places to stay, the owners will set the rules, and even just back yard camp sights,  It could work.
6 Make a list of hunting and fishing places open to members.
7 At events like, BBT, ROT, Galviston, and other large events Have people work on room rates at nice places to stay.
8 As many of us just love to shoot guns, make a list of places where that can be done.
9 Have a place for members to list the good  ride roads in their home area. Include sights that should be seen.
10 Make a call me list, of those to contact for a cold beer or a cup of coffee. for those passing through.
11 Start a legal advice dpt, manned by LEO,s and lawyers, so the answers are valid, as advice, that's all.
12 Find a member who knows about gunsmith issues and is willing to help.
This list could go on for a very long time, my point is there are so many ways this group can help each other beyond what oil to use, if it is going to be changed lets change it in ways that improve the site, and insure that it will continue to be a way for friends to help friends, I am not a board member, nor a whizz kid, I have no clue how to do these things. I do know that face to face I have yet to meet a member that I do not like.
I am hopefully going to be retired soon, so if that comes to be, I will help in any way I can. I am not keyboard skilled, but I will help those who are. We have a lot of things going for us in this group of people, lets do the best we can with it.
This in no way means I won't make fun of R.D. and Paul. Got to love em.

It does look good, but it would probably be best to go with a company that has a good reputation, so the sites not down a lot, better connection, etc...

Look at theses:
www.dreamhost.com
www.hostgator.com
www.bluehost.com

They offer some better features, come reccomended, and can actually be cheaper...

I think, if you asked, there would be plenty of people on this board that would pony up the money to keep this board going. I for one have gained a fair amount of knowledge from this site and would hate to see it go away. All you have to do is ask anything and this board has an answer. Just my .02....
