don't have any experience with the 1911, but several companies make them. get on some forums and read up on the different makers. if possible try to get in touch with "couldbefaster" on this board. i believe he owns a 1911. good luck.

I carry one on duty, a Colt Combat Elite with a buried BoMar sight. If you want a quality 1911 at a decent price I'd recommend a Springfield Armory. If you want bells and whistles, look at the Kimber line. There are several other good makes out there also. If I had to replace my Colt tomorrow I'd get a Springfield Armory. Be advised though; guns are like motor oil. Everybody has a pet brand and anyone who prefers something different is a fool - you'll get a lot of different advice. If it's a recognized brand and you like it, go for it.

I've been a bit of a 1911 fan for a while now.  I've got a Kimber, Springfield and a Les Baer custom.

Kimber:

Springfield:

Les Baer:

The Springfield is the "Mil-Spec" model, and I would not recommend the Mil-Spec model for anyone who can by any means afford a better one.  It was only $425, and it performs accordingly.  While it is reliable, it's accuracy is pretty poor.  We're talking 8" groups at 25yds.  Ouch!

The Kimber was $950, but you can get a good one for $800 or so.  Maybe even as low as $700 if you find a used blued model.  The Kimber is one of the older models, which in my opinion, makes it better.  The newer ones have been having issues, which isn't good.

The Les Baer is unbelievable.  It's way above your price range (most likely), but if you appreciate fine quality, and exceptional performance, try one out.

In sum- I'd recommend you find a Springfield in the $700-850 range.  It would make a very nice handgun for either a novice starting out, or the most seasoned firearms collector.

I know several officers who I used to work with who carried Springfield Operators.  Very nice pistols.  Good luck with your choice, whatever it may be.

PS- I used to carry a Glock 21 on duty, as I valued the extra rounds (13rds vs. 8rds per mag.)

Thanks again for the advices.
It looks like Springfield is the chioce. My other question is where is the best place to buy the pistol - gun shows, dealerships or online?

Where are you? A friend has a Kimber for sale; I believe he's asking $600 if he still has it. I'd snap it up myself if I had the money.

I live in Dallas area, may be we can meet somewhere in the middle if we can make a deal.

What is the model and year of the Kimber and what condition? Please check it out for me, Thanks,

There is a gun show at Dallas Market Hall on Saturday - the 29th

Another good place in Dallas is Bachman Pawn & Guns

8" groupings at 75 feet... just means you should have picked up your rifle. ;)
