a night fright
« on: September 28, 2008, 11:30:17 AM »

so I was driving home last night about 8:00 on 2978 (it's pretty dark at night), I was in my car  with little Benjamine and Alexa (babysitting) in the backseat. Benjamine and I were playing I spy. I spy the moon, I spy stars......I spy what the hell.........out of nowhere the shadow of horse galloping towards me in my lane backlit by a car a few hundred feet behind it in the other lane, I had to do a double take. By then it was clear it was a real horse and damn big and maybe 20-30 feet in front of my car. I started to swerve to the right and it looked like it was going to the right so I took a chance I could beat the car and went to the left zipped around it and back into my lane.  I drove a few hundred feet and pulled over the catch my breath, my heart was pounding. I have had several dear, dogs and other near misses on the road but never anything that spooked me as much as that did. I can not even imagine if I had been on my bike.

Just like a drunk will seek red lights, a horse will go towards headlights.  They're usually pretty smart animals...     ::)

I'm just glad you're ok.

I am so glad to hear that you were able to avoid the horse.  And yes it is good that you were not on your bike.

WOW......glad you and the grandbabies are OK.

Probably scared you more because you had your grandbabies in the car with you..........

How did Benjamine react? Did he think his grandmother was doing a Nascar stunt?

ALexa was screaming because the jerking motion tilted her car seat I couldnt really hear Benjamine over that.

My Dad said in most states if you hit a horse/livestock you are responsible for paying for it, I hadn't heard of that before.

Glad you and yours are OK!!!

I'm no attorney, but I fail to see how you would be liable for the horse if it was loose and ON THE HIGHWAY!!!!

Eh, more like the owner of the horse is liable for damages, direct and indirect, caused by his inability to contain the animal.

Wright!!!! Just try to find the woner..Don't try to get the state to pay if you hit a deer!!! You will have to pay the value of the deer...
