Dilema #2 How do I get to this!? .... GOT 'ER DONE, THANKS!
« on: August 24, 2008, 10:13:10 PM »

Okay, so to remove the custom pipes on my bike in order to do the clutch work, I can get to 3 of the four bolts securing the pipes to the engine. But this one bolt is a bugger due to the curvature of the pipe!? I have no idea how they even got in there to tighten it!? My angle ratchet can barely get the 12 mm socket into position. It just slips off trying to turn it.

Talk about improvisation! I found the smallest 12mm socket I had ( in a cheap home fixit kit ) and using the 1/4 inch universal suggested, then a socket screwdriver and vise grips... got it undone. Boy it was seized up too.
And not surprising I found a snapped bolt on the rear mount. Whoever did it screwed a nut on it to hold it. And NO gaskets!? Maybe that explains the occasion whistle I heard from time to time??? So now do I try to unseize the stuck bolt and replace it? I know I'm going to take Hipshot's advice and swap out the front bolt for an Hex head one!

Thanks for the help gang!

Can you get a box wrench in there through the bottom? Or of you take all the rest of the bolts off, you might be able to rotate the pipes to get to it.  I would use some painters tape to cover the pipe.

Try a deep well socket and a good pair of vise grips. The socket may not look the same when you get through.

I haven't seen your pipes (is it the lower nut on the front pipe?) so I don't know for sure. I've had some luck with stubby wrenches on some pipes. You may need to get a short 12mm socket with a hex base, or file flats on it and turn it with a wrench. An offset box wrench may be all you need. Hard to say without seeing it in person.

That's weird, the pic disappeared? I got it back up, hopefully longer this time.
I bought a 1/4 inch universal and tried it tonight. It kept flipping on me!!  Will try it again another night. But working late this week has me in a sour mood to begin with and that didn't help.

I can't get at it from the bottom because of the way the engine is formed around it. I'll try and see if by removing the other 3 bolts, I can rotate the pipe to allow easier access to this troublesome bolt?

Deep socket and vise grips are next ... just before the sledge hammer and crowbar!

If that doesn't work try a plasma cutter.  It'll soften that bolt right up.....

Oop's, not any help again.....

What I've done is slip the socket on the nut, then angle at it with a long thin extender with the universal join on that.

Take the engine out and that way you will have plenty of room to get to the bolt!!  8)

I'm afraid if I did that, I'd wind up replacing the engine with a Chevy small block  V-8 to go along with my new 1300 Final Drive  O0

Then I'd have to go over to the Dark Side as well  8)

 >:( >:( >:( Why does my pic keep disappearing!!!???  >:( >:( >:( Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

And yes Jim, it is that particular bolt!
