Final Drive swap
« on: July 17, 2008, 06:49:48 AM »

So I have the Bareass walk thru printed on rear wheel change out.. I've been told that the final drive swap is a pretty simple 4 bolt operation...and I can see that and count that high...

What do I need to know?

Is anyone going to be around DFW for me to call in a panic and beg to come over if I get in over my head?  :)

It's really easy.  Just don't forget to grease the spline. Also, keep the final drive right side up.  If not, you'll have a thick oilly mess on your hands.

While your down there you can clean out all that burn't rubber in the fender well.

Congrats, you'll never look for 6th gear again.....

Use the Moly paste and not the grease.

Morgan,
I am in Tyler and have a shop with a large lift and any tool you may need.  If you would care to come this far, I would be happy to help you with it.  In fact I will be taking my rear wheel off to change the tire and re-moly the spline (I now have my 'free' tube of Moly from Dow.  Quite a deal for a 3.5 oz. tube delivered to your door for free!!  I like it!!!

Anyhoo, if you are in the market for some help or would just like to watch, you are welcome.  9035939871 will get me most anytime and there is a recorder if not.  There are 15 bikes in the shop right not, three still undergoing procedures, but, they will be gone by noon tomorrow and I should be free to do some work for myself!!....finally!!!  ;D

Mighty friendly offer!  I think I'm going to throw it up on my pepsx stand and give it a try this afternoon tho.  I wouldn't mind the trip to Tyler at all, but I'm a little busy the next few weekends... not as busy as I'll be if I don't figure it out the first time thru!  LOL  But i have a manual and the bareass tire change walk thru.

You're welcome to come over...just know that every swear word I utter increases the threat of a laugh causing a wrench to fly....

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!

Ok, so here's the question...  I'm tore down and I was tired so I decided to call it quits and put it all back together tomorrow.

Is there any secret to getting the drive shaft back into the U Joint?

Like the song says,"ya got to wiggle it, just a little bit"

its easier to put the shaft in first then put the final drive one.

That didn't work too well for me... I got the shaft into the u-joint EASY that way but couldn't get the drive to hook up with the shaft.  Pulled it out, put the shaft into the drive and just wiggled it a bit and it slid right in.

Not done with the project yet, still have to reinstall the exhaust and fill the final drive and then risk my life to see if I did it right.  LOL  But the wheel turn freely, and I can see the gears move inside the drive with the fill cap off...that's a good thing, right?
