preload for 2-up
« on: May 27, 2008, 12:12:49 PM »

Where do you guys set your preload for 2-up riding?
My wife has started riding with me and my tale is too low. :-\
What do you suggest? It has always been set at 2. Rod

When my wife rides with me, I set it on 4.

I have an 02 1800C. When I had the OEM shocks mounted I ran them an # 4. I weighed about 160 and ride solo exclusively. I'm running Progressive 440 HDs now, and they are set at the lowest setting. I hope to get the standard springs for them; perhaps I'll be able to raise the setting some then.

I don't change the shock settings when I ride two up on my wife's bike. She too light to affect the handling.  8) O0

I don't care what other people think. They don't do it very often!
Of Course it's dirty. It's hard to clean when the tires keep moving.

Luckys Lover just hit it out of the park.  I was sitting here thinking about what a loaded question this is.  And variables up the kazoo.  I weigh 240 and girlfriend about 130.  OEM shocks were at 3 one up and 4 two up.  I now have progressive 440 HD and am completely unloaded one up and two full turns with girlfriend and t bag.

Is there a chart somewhere that gives suggestions for what the loadout should be? I'm a bigger than average fella, and am now wondering if mine might be set too low.

There are only 5 adjustments total you can make on each side.  I would find a road with some dips and just make a few passes.  Then change the preload one notch and hit it again.

The stock shocks are going to be bouncy on any setting, but you don't want is for it to bottom out.  If it's bottoming out, it will feel like the bike is slamming down and then stopping abruptly.  You want it to be a fairly controlled compression.

I changed the pre-load to #4. It has made a big difference in the control. The bike seems more stable, as in it doesn`t waller around any more. I will leave it set here for now. My weight is about 235 thanks for the input! O0 Rod
