Not realy wayner, we never said you can't have running lights... but they have to be amber...if your leds were amber or white, you'd be legal, but there can be no glare, as leds can do if pointed outwards.  I haven't seen any amber led's on a bike, even though with all the colors available, surely they're made.
Let us know what the msb says. I'm curious too...

Just spoke with John (missed his last name) from the MSU. He told me that as long as the lights were not pointing outward (down or toward the engine components) that they were fine... well, excepting the prohibited colors, flashing, etc. limitations we have already talked about.

According to him, the MSU will be adding this interpretation, in plain english along with the relevant statutes, to the FAQ section of their website within the next few days. Once the link is up, they are going to let me know, and I'll post it here.

The big thing that gets LEDs, as Snake pointed out, was that they shine outward and can produce a glare. Point em down or at the bike components, and they should be good.
