The darkside of the hill country

For all you new darksiders out there.  O0

With 17K miles on my car tire under my belt, I took to the hills last weekend to put the bike through her paces.

The first day out, there was very little traffic so I headed to 335 and blew it out on the roller coaster hills and turns. The tire handled beautifully. On 337 I was really able to test it at higher speeds with no noticeable difference. The last five miles from Vanderpool to Leakey was unpaved, but no problem if I slowed down and just cruised across the gravel.

Finally, while riding with a group of sport bikers, I came down 187 from the north into Vanderpool so fast that I didn't even think about what tire I was running... ;D

In summary, I've ridden the hill country many times on a motorcycle tire. The car tire made no difference. High speed turns dipping in and out of the hills were easy. The car tire tracks the turns very well. The crown top roads were only a factor at low speeds and the gravel,...well...it's always something I slow down for.  :)

Because once you try it, you'll be seduced and lost to the world of over-priced rear tires....

Like that's a bad thing.  :)

That car tire would make a HUGE difference on a sportbike with a tuned suspension. On a cruiser, the differences are negligible, and not nearly as critical. The weight, suspension, steering geometry, and low ground clearance of the cruiser significantly negate the effects of tire design aspects.

I have many miles on the Darkside. I wouldn't want it on a sport bike, but on the VTX, I wouldn't be without it. Some do it for the cost, some for the handling, and some are just wanting to try something different. There are a few who have gone back to MC tires, but not many. There are still some who say we will all die in a nuke meltdown for running a car tire. So far the only major difference I know of, is that I have been told that I kick up a huge rooster tail in heavy rain, I run the Hydro Edge, The bike takes the road better than it did with the stock tire, so I see no reason to fix what is working for me. If the car tire had a major handling problem I would have noticed it by now.

    I have run many thousand miles on car tires on 1949 and earlyer HD 74s. Of course during and just after WWII and all tires were hard to come by. I notice some are running them on 650 cc Burgmans with good results. As long as they will crowd the 2008 Busa on speed and curves I say what the hey.    WWWwwEEEEEEEeeeeeLLLLLLLLLllllllllll Maybe just a little slower. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D
