Ok... I'll play devils advocate here...Would you have rather paid way more for the bike so the tax would be more justified? ;D

J/K. I know what you mean lover, (hmmm, that ain't quite right, is it?) but they are trying to keep people from "selling" their 5 year old cars to a "friend" for $20. and losing all the revenue off it. This will keep people more honest.

Well, I just checked out my 1995 Kawasaki Vulcan with 44K miles.. $2230. AppleSauce, I only paid $2000 for it three years ago. How can it be worth that much. Hell, Connie dropped it and I highsided off a curb on it. Broke the headlight bracket and the leg foot peg while I was flopping around in the grass. OK OK, I think I'm going to stop now while my blood pressure is still low. AppleSauce. fricking idjuts.

You are right, it looks like the condition of the vehicle would have to be taken into account. What if someone were to buy a totaled vehicle, for parts, then decide to fix it up. To register it, the way it is now, you'd have to pay tax on  it as if it were a good one, worth the full price.

if you disagree with the presumptive value, then you can get a vehicle appraisal done and submit it, and they will accept that as the value (probably only by someone they approve though)

Ok, bear with my dumb blonde moment here...but why do we have to even pay taxes on resold vehicles??? Taxes have already been paid on it as a new vehicle.

It's the government way. You get a paycheck, and pay income taxes on the money. Then you spend it, and pay a sales tax. The retailer remits the tax you paid to the government, and pays taxes on his profits (also his leftover inventory at the end of the year). Then he pays his employees, who pay income taxes on the money. Then they spend it, and pay a sales tax............

That one dollar becomes hundreds of dollars in taxes. That's why our government has so much money lying around that they don't know what to do with.

Hipshot is correct, of course. Anytime something is bought or sold, used or new, taxes are supposed to be charged against the sale. If the same car is sold ten times, taxes will be accessed each time. That is why they have the registration process they do... otherwise they couldn't collect, because not too many would voluntarily go pay taxes on a sale unless they were forced to report it and register.

Exactly. The FJ Cruiser I bought a couple of months ago was bought new in November, so that owner paid sales tax on the purchase price. 800 miles later, he sells it to me, and I had to pay sales tax on what I paid him. Almost a complete double dip for the state, in less than six months, although they taxed me on what I paid, which was lower than what their website said it was worth.

The thing that makes me laugh about the whole thing is the car dealers quoting you squat on your trade in, while telling you that they are "saving" you money, because you will pay sales tax only on the difference. Hey, dipsquats, let me do the math. I think I'll be just fine selling it on my own....

Presumptive taxes are not required when done by a dealer. They just want to stop you or I from doctoring down the sales amount so we can pay less tax.

A point of interest....and something else to rant about.  Mileage does not make a diff. I put in 12 thousand and I put in 65 thousand and both came up with $10560

Ran into the same thing when I bought my leased truck this year.  My residual value was one thing, but I had to pay taxes on their value.
