Valve adjustment
« on: February 26, 2008, 01:38:09 PM »

Have an '06 1800C with 6300 miles on it. If I remember right, it will be due for a valve adjustment (or at least it calls for one) at 8000 miles. It already has some lifter rattle  (sometimes fairly loud) when engine braking at higher RPM's and sometimes at about 70 mph just cruising. Doesn't do it all the time. Anybody have any experience with this? Seems a bit premature for an adjustment......Also, any idea what it costs to do one?

8,000 is your second adjustment (one at 600). This is actually something just about any X'er can do. Check out the VTX Tech site and the VTXCafé pages for various step-by-step instructions (poison's is the simplest).

Although the 1800 calls for the first adjustment at 8K, it doesn't hurt to check it early. You never know who set them at the factory.................... It's not a difficult task, but the first one can seem a bit daunting if you've never watched one. Where are you? BTW, although a lot of folks here cry about how hard it is to do, it isn't anywhere near as involved as a valve adjustment on that CBR.

Brad, Scott... if you do it, can I come watch?  I want to do my own but I'm a really visual learner and would like to see it... or heck, if someone who knows how to do it wants to come to my place and point, I'll do the work and feed you.  Whatever, I'm easy.  Well, I'm not easy, but I'm priced to sell.... LOL

Hipshot, I'm in McKinney. Brad, what tools are needed for the job? I think I have most of what will be needed with the exception of a Micrometer, which I can borrow if needed. Pug, thanks for the links. O0 That info will come in handy. Maybe we can all get together on a Saturday or Sunday do mine and Morgans, grill some burgers....... O0 O0

Well, if you're in McKinney you're a little too far away for me to help, but it seems you have able assistance lined up now. Just remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey. Or was that righty loosey, lefty tighty?

I don't have a way to get my bike there to do it, or I'd certainly bring it along and race ya.   But yeah, I'd love to figure something out...unfortunately the only weekend I'm going to be in town until April is Mar 22rd...  it's always something, isn't it?  LOL

Pug, the 1800 doesn't get a 600 mile adjustment. Only the 1300 does.
