Nitrogen in tires
« on: February 07, 2008, 06:47:03 PM »

Was wondering if any have heard of putting nitrogen in the tires rather than air.

I use pink air.   O0

Yes, I have. Can't remember what the purpose is. I think less fluctuation in pressure.

There was a pretty extensive discussion on that awhile back. I THINK it was here, but it could've been on the VTXOA.

Yes, it is to avoid alterations in the pressure of your tires. I had Grif's put nitrogen in my new Metzler's, and have to say that it works like a charm. No more "topping off" the tires, no more concern with loosing pressure with temperature changes, etc. Sure, it costs a little more (initially) but frees you from worrying about tire pressure any more.

I saw on the news that they were charging $40 to replace the air with N2. (cars)
In theory, gases in general expand in higher tempertures which increases pressure (Increased molecular activity), and in cooler tempertures the gas becomes denser causing lower pressure ( decreased molecular activity). Thats why the tire pressure fluctuates. Tire pressure will change just in the course of the day, cooler in the morning, hotter in the afternoon. Since the N2 is a denser gas, the fluctuations may be decreased some.
But really, how often do you add air to your tires, not often enough to pay someone who says he has better air.

This to will pass.

Boogie, your sagicity is exceeded only my the loss of air pressure in my nitrogen filled tires on a cold day...and it ain't much!!!  (j/k)

Fact is, after measuring the inflation over the course of four months and finding a less-than 1lb change (since late September with more than 2500 miles ridden), I'm convinced by what I see and not what I read.

And who said anything about punctures? Doesn't matter what you run in tires (unless you like the goo) - have hole will go flat.

Keep your air and be the critic. I'm thrilled with my nitrogen.

My intent was not to insult your intelligence. If you are happy with it, thats all that matters.

I think I'm switchin' to pink air like Brad. That wild cherry stuff I've been using makes it difficult to smell the bumper... :D

I've been thinking about that density thing and I'm thinking anal gases may work even better! The hardest thing is getting squated low enough to get the supply to the demand!
