Cable vs Dish
« on: February 01, 2008, 02:16:27 PM »

Gonna make the jump soo to the HDTV, thinking of reception and I don't like what the HD antenna has to offer.  I know dish is much cheaper than cable, but I hear the dish loses reception on stormy or cloudy days.   What do you have and how do they compare.  I like cable, but they only want to seem to sell you a package with phone and net.

I've had DISH before and occasionally I would get "rain fade"....it was irritating but I had many more channels.  I have a bundle package now with cable, net and phone and have never had a problem with any of the services.  Also, DISH is not an option for me because I can't point it in the southern direction I would need to, my condo balcony faces north.

Switched from Time Warner cable 2 weeks ago to Dish Network.  I have never been happier with my programming.  We had VERY severe weather here this week, and we had NO problems.  Believe me, if we did, I would know it, since my wife was off this week and would not tolerate missing her soaps!

We have a house out in the country and the only option we have is Direct TV.  We also rent a temporary apartment in Deer Park and have Comcast (or as we say Craptastic)....needless to say we strongly prefer Direct TV. Outside of having lost service a few times during MAJOR storms, Direct TV is far superior to cable in our opinion...altho I will not support Hughes Net for internet service...it sucks.

You beat me to it!  ;D

I would recommend picking up this issue of CR. Not only does it do a great rundown on the question you are asking, but the cover story is on the HDTV options out there. Real science, not just a bunch of numbnuts on a VTX board...  :D ;)

DirecTV for this numbnut!  O0

Hey Hey something i actually know about...

Satalite Good for recieving... decent if you want to get net with it ( Broadband cable will always be faster)

Cable More solid and safe... but less manuverability...

a few ways to keep from loosing signal with a dish... SECURE IT DOWN... i mean like heavy... if its a wall mount you cant do much but if its a ground type anchor that B*tch down...

due to the fact that i am a satalite tech for the army i get to learn a bit...

twice a year you will run into days when you will hit "Black out times" when the sun passes right behind the satalite your pointing at... this will last from 5 to 7 minutes of down time...

If your worried about Weather problems... It happens a bit when your not doing TX and RX... if your only using RX it will happen from time to time cause there is nothing to strengthen the power thats coming to you...

... um yea if i keep on writing ill get into a bunch up technical mumbo jumbo....

Another thing... Learn to Point the dish yourself... it will help imensly...

and a third thing... I can not spell worth a damn :D
