Exhaust Loosening Up !!!!
« on: June 18, 2006, 09:42:39 PM »

I Have had Hard Chrome Kickers on my 05 VTX1800R since about a week after I got it.  About every 800 miles or so, give or take, I notice the decel popping getting worse.  Sure enough, I always seem to have to re-torque the bolts back to 17ft lbs.  This usually clears up the popping, or at least  reduces it to normal.  Is there a way to prevent this, or is this just the way it is?  Am I missing something?

I always have to check my V&H. They seem to loosen up also. I just keep a close look at them. You don't want to lose one of the nuts while out on a ride.

Maybe a silly question but will I be able to get them off when I need to, with out breaking them off?  I was worried about the heat.

From what I understand, Blue will come loose with some muscle but Red will not. I also don't know how loctite reacts to the heat.

Are there enough threads/bolt sticking through the nut to put on a second nut to lock it?

Good idea fuzzy. If it's just a little bit, you could use an acorn nut to finish it off proper!

All they have on them is the acorn nuts, not enough thread to do both.

DAG NAB IT!!

The racing boys/girls use safety wire and wire the nut in place, but that sounds like a lot of work.

Back to the drawing  board.

Careful with the locktite. You won't break the studd but you'll probably unscrew the exhaust stud from the head before you'll break the locktite loose.  That's inconvenient but not a catastrophe.

I suppose you could use a lock washer or a ny-loc nut to help keep it still.

Blue lock tite will not work it loses its strenght at about 300 degrees

Red lock tite will stand up but can only be freed after reaching 500 degrees to break its hold.

That is why I never tried it, but there must be a way to keep them tight.  All that loosening and tightening cant' be good for the gaskets.  Any othe ideas?
