Functions like this are a double edge sword for business owners. So what that you're not selling knic-knacs. It didn't look like the clothing store owners selling beer and other drinks were complaining. Ya think the resturants were complaining, or the hotels? It for sure Budweiser wasn't.

How many of you Houstonians go to Galveston to do your Christmas shopping?

I wonder why November vs September is a sticking point?

I wonder why November vs September is a sticking point?

"Their" point is that November is dipping into the Christmas selling season.

When the hurricane hit a few years ago in Sept., the rally moved the dates to Nov. It's cooler and there's really no other major national rallies in Nov., so the date stuck.

A majority of the 120 people who packed the city council chambers encouraged City Manager Steve LeBlanc to work with the promoter to reach an agreement that will keep the bikers coming back.

A true Capitalist knows they need people.

Fant suggested any temporary discomfort caused by the rally — which brings thousands of motorcycle riders, traffic and noise to the island for four days in November — should be bearable because, his research showed, rally visitors come back throughout the year.

Additional Hotel/Motel, gas, food, drink, and Knic-Knacs.

He also asked the city to limit the number of year-round businesses allowed temporary permits to sell beer during the event and make them contribute $1,500 each toward security and cleanup. Limbock also asked for final say over who got the temporary permits.

See my original statement above. I don't blame the promoter for asking them to "kick in". He has to pay for the clean up cost.

Leslie Sommer, director of the Historic Downtown Strand Partnership, said the later date was bad for business because it came right at the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

But local hotel operators said the rally would not be as beneficial for them in September because booking rates already were high.

Restaurant owners also praised the event’s timing and its participants, saying the rally gave them a much-needed boost during a slow time of the year.

This is a case of the "tail wagging the dog". Leslie Sommer is the "President" of the "Downtown Merchants Association". They just call it by a different name, but that's what it is all the same. She's probably too busy "politicing" to realize what's going on. But as you can see her constiuents don't agree.

What'd I tell you?

Distant relative owns a book store on the Strand. Went to pay her a visit during the last LSR and she said that the rally hurt her business. However, the store was full of leather jackets and she had to talk to me between ringing up sales.

She must sell a heck of a lot of books when the rally isn't there... ::)

things happen in November... COME ON!!

I don't know about the $1,500 bucks. Lets see how much money he is making first. Where else could he hold it that would attract like it does now....Knowwhere!!!

Wasn't Galveston the last chance for it to succeed???
