Careless covering (poor tie down, wrong placement or ropes, etc.), or the use of the wrong kind of cover, can scratch plastic, chrome, ruin paint, wear spots on seats, backrests, and mess up your bags. Unless you've got an enclosed trailer, IMHO it's best to tie it down well and give it a wash once you arrive (if needed).
