Texas Law on straight pipes?
« on: January 14, 2008, 12:01:28 PM »

Being new to Texas, can anyone tell me what the law may have to say about straight pipes?
I was at the Honda dealer over the weekend and was informed of what I would need to pass State Inspection.
Baffles weren't on the list but was told the Police frown on straight pipes?

Any comments welcome.
thanks,
LW

Actually, I believe that the Federal laws are what apply on the Texas inspection. I've never seen an inspection shop set up to properly test an exhaust system, but that doesn't mean there isn't such a station out there. Offhand, I'd say that if they aren't obnoxiously loud you're probably going to be okay in the majority of stations. Check with your local inspection station; they have a book outlining all of the procedures and requirements, and can tell you what they customarily accept.

Any pipe that isn't stamped from the EPA is illegal.  Basically, once you remove your oem pipes, you're game for a ticket.  However, it's unlikely anyone will mess with you unless you're being a nuisance.  Like setting off alarms on purpose, revving your bike for no reason at a light, etc.

okay, so Texas isn't any more stringent than Federal Regs. I understand the whole noise issue. Vancouver had a noise ordinance that they enforced in the summer because of the tourist season. Loud stereos and loud bikes / cars got ticketed for showing off. But as long as I road through the city normally, I was never looked at twice.

So my next question is ... http://www.texasxriders.com/index.php?topic=6885.0

it's kinda like the booming car that i get stuck next to in traffic..Im llike ?turn that sheet down man!? Im sure we are looked at the very same way sometimes..especially the guys with the ridiculously loud pipes who insist on getting their bikes noticed by sittin there revving..over here they have a noise ordinance for those loud cars and they do enforce it when it becomes necessary..nothing on bikes that Im aware of but id read that they're regulating bikes(sound decibels) in other states. I use the baffles in my bigshots..dont need to wake the neighborhood everytime i ride..anyway, id hold on to those stock pipes if i have a place to store them just in case..at some point we may need stock pipes to pass inspections..ya never know..jus my .02

I get my inspection every year at Pro-Active Quick Sticker in my area.  I have HK DD Slipons and they have never even asked me to crank up the bike other than to pull in to the bay.  They just check lights, horns and turn signals.  Never had a problem there.   You might see if they have a place in your area.  Like what was said earlier, I think as long as you aren't acting a fool, the locals won't mess with you.

I get our bikes inspected at DFW Honda in Grapevine.  They have never even started our bikes, so the pipes were never an issue.

I don't think the sound of the pipes is an inspection issue. Having the desmog done may become an inspection issue some day.
