Valve Adjustment Tool Question
« on: January 14, 2008, 06:21:48 AM »

Ok, did the pair valve removal last weekend and feeling my Wheaties and feel confident to tackle the valve check instead of paying stealer prices when I know all they do most of the time is take the cover off, look at it, BAM! 140 bucks gone if they even do that much.

Now, I know I need the valve adjustment tool and I see one on HDL for around 10 bucks.  I look in the service manual and they list two different tools, as follows;

070MA-MEA0100  OR 07908-KE90100 with 10mm box wrench.  Excuse my ignorance, but don't quiet understand the one with the 10mm box wrench.  I want one tool to do the job.  If anyone has the wrench and has done this, which one do you have?

I was reading a tip page by a rider on VTXOA and he said he just used a 10mm offset box wrench, a 4mm open end and the feeler gauge.

I don't know how you feel about company when you do your adjustment, btw, but I'd love to see it done before I tackle it myself.  I actually ordered a tapet wrench from HDL and it should be here any day.. you'd be welcome to borrow it instead of ordering one then you'd know if you actually need it.

Wait... you have a 1300, don't you?  Drat.  Well, you'd be welcome to borrow the wrench anyway.  :)

yep, I have the 13, not sure if the process is the same or not.  I was thinking of ordering the tool since I may want to keep doing the work in the future.  Or I might just get the 10mm offset and 4 mm open.  According to Poison on VTXOA that is all he uses.

I'd LOVE to attend a tech day... I learn fast but don't like to go it alone on things I don't know how to do... basically I like to buddy jump the first time.  :)  I want to do my brake and clutch fluid too... but would rather have someone who's done it pointing and saying, "now do this" the first time.  LOL  I'm a wuss.

I have the brake bleeder that was recommended by several people and it works great.  I got it from Autozone.  You are welcome to borrow it.  I can't help you on the 1800 as it is much different than the 13.  The 13 is a very simple process, but if I am correct the 18 has to be bled in a certain sequence.

This is for the 1300, don't know if the 1800 is different;

Found a post on the California board by Biglry for the 1800;

kencoll is now an expert on valve adjustments, but he only knows how to do it when simultaneously installing Leatherlyke bags & trunk.
