What should a new rider do...
« on: October 25, 2007, 08:30:03 AM »

Questions for all. I have been riding for 30 years and kinda forgot how i learned to ride. I think I actually learned on the farm in Michigan on a Honda 50.

My girlfriend is thinking about getting a bike. I suggested that she take a riders course before purchasing a bike just to make sure this is what she wants. She is taking a course at San Jacinto HD on the 8th. I want her to take another class after that before getting out..

What would your suggestions be???

For sure take the two day course, sounds like she is taking a one day course.
 16 hours over two days.

Any course is good. They start you off as if you've never stradled a bike before. The 4 day course might be good. It'll allow some "sink in" time.

The coarse, no matter which one, 2 day or 4 day, are all good if taught well. My wife took it and had never driven before. It took a couple of weeks to get her confidence up and running but now she's doing great. We went down a couple of weeks ago and rode the Sisters, fanstastic, she did great, I just have to keep reminding her that she doesn't have to haul Cranberries and drag the pegs on every corner! I hope your GF learns to ride and does real well, Safely  O0 O0 O0

The course is pretty good but if you want more get a copy of the Ride Like a Pro video it is supposed to be good for newbies. I have a friend that said it really helped her in the beginning. She shouldn't take the advance course untill she has 6 months to a year of riding experience.

Actually Hooter, it seems like he did a ride like big pro video about two years ago or so. Put it on the site here. It was pretty good! I think he did it aboutthe time Tapper finished taking his rear fender off!

This is what I would do, if I were BigPro.

I would have her follow me up to I-10, switch vehicles (on the shoulder), and let her ride that Big Bear on I-10 and get some experience.
