final drive swap
« on: October 21, 2007, 06:01:17 PM »

any of you 1800 boys want to do a swap for a 1300. this seems to be getting pretty popular on the vtxoa board. I'd like to try it out. I want the faster take offs, and you guys want the lower rpm's at higher speeds.

how does it effect the take off speed of the 1800? I know it helps the 1300 but would I be getting the shi#@y end of the deal?

Take off is not as torquey, but it pays off in the end.  I've yet to play with another x, but it seems as though you get more accelleration at the top end.

mpgs have stayed the same.

take off will suffer slightly, but you can run it farther up before hitting the rev limiter. only time i've seen another 1800 beat a "swapped" 1800 is when the "unswapped" 1800 started out in 2nd gear. simply put, with the 1300 gearing you'll be shifting around 40-45mph before hitting the limiter as opposed to 30-35mph on 1800 gearing. so as the "unswapped" 1800 is shifting your still excellerating. kind of equals out until the top end when the 1300 gearing will get you to a higher mph. thinking of trying this myself, not really into the drag racing and more into putting on the highway miles. good luck and ride safe

I have done it and swapped back. I could run ot first gear longer than with the 1800 but while I'm shifting to second gear the 1800 beside me pulls ahead and I can't catch him. The difference in gas mileage was not enough to make the change for. When riding with all of (ya'll) the other 1800s I was always either lugging it in fifth or tight in fourth. Now by myself out on the road it was less rpms at 80 and nice but like I say riding with others at 65 to 70 it was a hassle. Just my 2cents
