OT: GRrrrrrrrr vandals/thieves/expensive car parts
« on: October 09, 2007, 12:09:01 PM »

Bought the wife a brand spankin' new PT cruiser convertible back in 05. Sunday night some low life, idiotic piece of crap cut the top open to get inside to steal from me. The dumbass didn't try the door which was unlocked because there wasnt anything in it to steal.

Now, get this....

the price for a replacement top is so high that the insurance is thinking about totalling the car!!!

6 grand for the top, 2 for the inside liner...

I can't believe it!!!

I'm to the point that I don't think I'd call the police anymore when I caught someone screwing with my stuff...fish bait is what they'd be I'm so pissed.

Thanks for letting me vent.

go to a local upholstery (sp) shop and see what they can do for you...  if the insurance co. is using an original equipment OEM top it will cost alot of money, I'm sure there are some A/M tops out there that will fit your car.  I replaced a convertible top not long ago and it only cost $750.00 parts and labor.

Okay, not gonna total it. As it turns out, the part number they used to get a new top was for the whole works, top, frame, hydraulics etc... It's quite a bit cheaper for just the canvas. Still, I really had other plans for the $500 bucks I had to spend on the deductible. But, god help the man I catch breakin' in because he'll get an Cranberries whoopin' for two.

had a soft-top jeep when i was in the AF (wife got it in divorce...).  after getting a DUI, next time i went out drinking i left it at the bar and rode home with a friend.  came back the next day to pick it up and my $500 cd deck was stolen.  they left the remote, some 6x9's and a 10-disc changer.  even left their screw driver sitting in my floorboard.

called the cops.  the first thing the cop asked was "did they cut the top or the windows to get in?"  i said hell no, i left the doors unlocked so they wouldnt have to do that.  cd player is cheaper than windows and top.  he just laughed and said that was the smartest thing hes heard...

as much as i loved it, i dont think i would get another soft top vehicle.  just too many chances of crap like that happening....

Had a Miata top slashed for the stereo (I wasn't savvy enough to leave it unlocked, if that would've helped).  Got a removable hard top with the insurance money, a few months later, the scum just bust a window out, like regular.  Don't think it matters much if you have a soft top or not.  Maybe a few of the theiving scumbags will get their asses shot off with the new Castle law and the rest will decide the risk/reward ratio ain't working out any more.  I'd hate to kill anybody over a $300 stereo but on the other hand, I do have some pent up hostility for 'em.  I'm kind of a night owl, and go outside all hours of the night to smoke.  One of these days...

Crow, I think MOST of us would hate to kill someone over a $300 stereo, but if a whole lot of those car burglars started getting their heads blown off maybe the problem wouldn't be so common any more. They're learning that property crimes don't carry much of a sentence, and I haven't found too many burglars who seem concerned about the detrimental effects of having multiple burglary convictions behind them.
