More 1800 Exhaust Questions
« on: September 04, 2007, 08:19:41 AM »

I am working on my Bike and did the cheap exhaust mod, drilling the holes in the baffles and ears at the rear, I'm not happy, to me it sounds like a loud lawn mower.  I am waiting to hear a bike that has the Cobra pipes on it and some of the guys say his sounds similar to mine. Maybe it's just me, but in the meantime I am looking to change it out.  So here is the question.

Does anyone have the experiance with Santee Exhaust Pipes and if so, how do you like them?

Thanks,

I put the Cobra Angled Slashcuts on my F, and they sound killer!!  Not too loud but not quiet either.  Very nice rumble at idle...

TX cruiser, while the loud pipes you are looking for will undoubtedly sound better to you, they will still not sound quite as good as a 1300, given the crank pin positioning and the firing cadence. The 1300's have "the" sound, the 1800's have "a" sound :(

Nope, it's me, it's real, not thrilled with the sound, but I think thats just the way it is.  I have been listening to some 1800's at youtube.com, and from the explanation about the firing of the 1800 , Thats just the physics of it.  I love the bike, just did not like the Hiss, hiss sound of the stock pipes, been spending money like a drunken sailor on my bike this month I have owned it and decided to drill out the pipes. just not what I expected. I may have to pony up some bucks for pipes next, i need to hear some in person one of these days.  So when are the guys from San Antonio meeting up?  I hate to have to wait till May of 08 to hear a 1800.

Thanks,

Not too many out there with stock exhaust on their 1800's, mine is the only one I know of. Just a few "drilled out" ones out there, it seems that if you feel the need to drill, you'll probably be getting a new set of pipes soon. Odds are, that is.

Thanks Snake,

You are right, new pipes are in the future, I called VTXExhaust.com and they said they can still modify my pipes if I screw them up with the Clayton mod. LOL, but I found a set of Santee pipes that were pretty cheap, so I may end up just doing that, no downtime, besides the stupid rain this week. I just thought I would ask if anyone else had heard them good or bad.

As far as cheap goes, you can buy a set of mufflers from JC Whitney and use them with your headpipes for about 70-100 bucks, at most. You might try that first.

My 1800 still has stock pipes. It's sad.  :'(

But I don't have the money to get new ones yet. So.... I will have to wisper past the slower bikes on the road for now.

i had the cobra staggered lowboys on mine and while they were loud on open throttle they were just beefy enough on idle to get you noticed at a light... and they look great

Have you thought about gutting it all-together?  I took out the first and second baffels on each pipe and it has a throaty sound to it. They sound like custom pipes.
