My Turn..... Plasma or LCD?
« on: July 05, 2007, 02:52:03 PM »

What would you suggest? I have Direct TV as well. Looking to get something around the 42" to 50" screen.

With the blood shortage and all, the LCD is more politically correct.

I have a 60" Sony LCD HD, with Dish Network HD Package.
Sharpest TV I've ever seen.   I think Plasma is comparable.
It's advantage is "Thin",  you can hang it on the wall....

Plasma burn-in is a thing of the past.

I have a 55" Sony LCD, bought three years ago, when plasmas were waaay overpriced. I think the plasma folks, (who all make LCDs too, btw...), saw that they couldn't charge that much to anyone but the folks with more money than sense, so they brought the plasma prices down to where they are now. Go to cnet.com for some good info on the formats...  O0

p.s. the good thing is that whatever type you end up with, you won't need a key to start it!  ;D ;)

LCD. I've got a 42" Sony Bravia 1080i. "I don't what that means.....but I want it." (Jessica Simpson)

I really like it. Great picture, and I'm still concerned with the old plasma burn-out.

Bought a 50" Samsung DLP 1080i from BEST BUY about a month ago. Has the best picture I have ever seen.  That is when the wife lets me watch a show.  I still have to watch the 21 in."color works some of the time" in the computer room.  Can't wait for college football season.

Get a cheap inexpensive TV and rabbit ears. Reason being, if it quits raining you should be out on the X instead of home watching TV. 8)

Bro i just bought a Samsung 42" 1080i LCD. IT has a better picture and better color. The other thing is the plasma will fade out in a coulpe of years. Talk to the people at Best Buy or any of the tv places. They will tell you the advantages. But i think  you will be happer with a LCD. BIGBIRD99

plasma currently has a viewable life of about 60000 hours.that's a LOT of freakin' watching tv. if you want the highest contrast ratio and widest viewing angle, you need plasma. If you want to be able to have a screen with a slightly less reflective surface (if you watch with direct sunlight on the screen and room you're watching in all the time and are gonna be bothered with reflections) you need LCD, which is also wall mountable from many manufacturers. LCD has a lower contrast ratio, and is, therefore, less suited for direct sunlight viewing. DLP sucks for viewing angle, but has good colors. I would stay away from that, and seeing that you didn't list it as an option.....well, probably a moot point. Plasma is covered with glass. LCD can--and almost always is--covered with plastic. just like your computer LCD. you can't puncture the plasma glass by bumping into it with, oh let's say, a spikey air cleaner cover. Plasma weighs more because of the glass, but are you really gonna be holding it up all the time? they'll both be lighter than pretty much whatever you might have up to this point. at 42"  a 1080P plasma will be more expensive at this point. unless you have a blu-ray/HD-DVD player (PS3) 1080P won't matter. If you have one of those things or are planning on using one.... get the 1080P, also called FULL HD now by most manufacturers. If you are considering a 1080P source-get the LG multi-player ($1200)- it plays both 1080P formats.

I have a 42" plasma. My best friend has 42" LCD. Both look great, but the most important thing is that you get clean power to it and set up the color. I recommend Digital Video Essentials HD for color setup of your TV. it will make a huge difference and improve the life of either set.  oh, yeah, any TV can burn in if you leave it on all the time on a stock ticker, or on a sports channel or news that has something running on the top or bottom of the screen all the time. If you want me to write you another book about this, just send me a PM with specifice questions. I've done a lot of research on this stuff, home theater, and all things related. good luck and let us know what you get.
