New brake pads from HDL
« on: May 27, 2006, 04:07:43 AM »

I was going to get some new brake pads from HDL while the sale is going on. But looking at the options, I'm a little confused.

 http://www.hondadirectlineusa.com/vtx/byProduct.asp?prd=Brakes&ID=68195936

They have the EBC (complete set, front and rear $30), which I think is what I bought before from them. They have worked just fine. But, lower down the page they have Honda pads seperated out per rear, left front and right front...Total $136  :o

Does anyone know if there is any higher quality involved or is Honda trying to compete with Harley on how much the brand name is worth?

I don't mind cheap except when it comes to brakes and tires. But $100 ?  :-\

Thanks for any helpful input.

I'm running EBC and they work well enough to lock the tire.

You mean the front only? Or back also?

I'm probably wrong, but seems when I bought the EBC before I got all 3 sets for the $30. I've been running them front and back and I don't have any complaints. Even pulling my little trailor they do the trick, although I will admit I had one quick stop coming back from the Hill Country that I had my doubts about whether I was going to stop in time or not.
Luckily when the back tire did locked up and start to skid I was almost stopped, out of gears and out of room.  :P
That was one time I was wishing I didn't have that trailor pushing me.

I bought the hitch from HITCHDOC and built a trailor. Sort of cheezy but it works.

Does the hitchdoc fit outside or inside the fender? I've been looking for an internal model.

The one for the "C" fits outside. And there is nothing magical about it. It could be made very easily. I wish I had traced out a pattern before I mounted it.

To make one that would fit inside would be a little tougher because the frame is not flat where you bolt up but rather sort of oval shaped. It can be done, it would just take a little engineering to make the flat hitch stable on the semi round frame. Next time I drop my rear wheel I'll take a better look from that angle.

HAH! I could be lucky locking my rear on sandy asphalt! My front brakes lock when only pushing my rear pedal quicker than the rear ones do. Of course, the front brakes are excellent.
I only have 13000 on these sintered pads. I might try something else.

I'm still running stock on back and have a hard time locking them up as well.

For what it's worth I've got over 42,000 miles on my OEM pads. Still have plenty of meat on all of them (yes, I check them) and have no trouble locking the wheels at low speed. I have no intention of trying to lock them at high speed, so that part will have to remain a mystery.

My first set (stockers) were wore out about 28 or 32 thousand or so Jim. 'Course, I start and stop quick, I'm not a very "laid back" rider at all when riding 1 up. I'd probably get pretty good, or at least decent gas mileage if I was! ::) Brakes would last a lot longer too! ;D
