I too have been thinking about ink. I just turned 50, been on bikes all my life, Did a hitch in the Navy SS, almost 30 years as a railroader, I think what turned me off to ink was all the old men, mostly WW2 vets that I hung out with as a kid. Their ink was horrible. Most got their tats as teenagers and by the time I saw them they had spent 50 years on ageing skin. I was with my friends watching them get ink,   many times, in places from Main to Guam, but I am not sure if it was, that, I just never saw any thing I wanted, or the memory of the old men on the (dead pecker) bench. At my age if I live long enough for my ink to become a ugly darkened patch of wrinkled skin, that will be fine.

I am going to get a fathers day tattoo to add to my collection, this one if for the kids.

I have one in mind now, Pain was never a factor. I am a welder among other things. I have lost a good bead or two due to slag once in a while, but it was the extremely large ones that get lodged and stick and can't be brushed off, that cause me to do the slag dance.

tattoos are not painful (unless they right right over a bone), I see it more like an irritation than pain.
and my kids have been "out the door" for some time now (thank god!)

thanks Claw, shaw's were great. they are on the higher side price wise, but you can tell they go the extra mile in keeping everything very clean and protected, to the point of being anal about it.
if anyone else is looking, i highly recommend them.

The new inks that are out, especially if you use a sun block on the high sun areas, will be almost as good when you die as it is after you get it. You're like me too, you don't have that long to go till you leave here! I hope you stay longer than I do though, I'd rather go while the gettin's good!
