Oil drips comming out of Air Cleaner
« on: May 23, 2006, 06:09:21 PM »

I have a tear drop thunder air cleaner and I cleaned it about 2000 miles ago and thought by now that the oil would be dried up. I figure it has so Iam thinking something else is going on?? I have been looking at a blow up of the factory air cleaner and hopefully there is like a valve or something else is worn out, I hope!! lol  Any ideas?? Now it is not alot of oil but I can take my hand while going down the road and get drops off the bottom of the air filter and the only time I get oil comming out of the breather is when in travel. No leaks after that.    ??? ???  Thanks, Chad

Oil coming out of the crankcase vent is normal.  You may be having oil just running along the bottom of the air filter making it appear like it's coming from inside the filter itself.

If it is actually coming from inside of the air filter itself make sure you didn't plug the crankcase vent or you could blow a seal.  When some people install aftermarket air filters they plug the vent on accident.

Always have oil in the bottom of the stock filter housing, even with de-smog and "opened" air box.
Don't worry... Be happy!

On the back side on the bottom there is a little plastic bag looking thing that collects the oil that might come from the filter (k&N).  You might check to see that the bag is still there or maybe it's full and the oil is leaking around the seal of the housing.

There is a maintenance that needs to be done check the handbook some kind of drain tube that needs to be drained. Its a tube that gets full if you can't find it I'll look it up for you.

I'm not sure having never looked at one close, but I don't think his thunder air uses the same housing and  drain trap setup the stock air box uses, Swamp. You don't sound like you've ever looked at yours though. It traps water too, any time you ride in the rain, it's good to drain after each occurance.

I didn't get a  very good response, but here it is....the thunder air boxes don't seem to have the oil and moisture trap that the stock air boxes have...I seem to have this occur right after I clean my filter, and have attributed xcessive oil leaking to over oiling the filter....been told by several knowledgable people that this small amount of oil will not hurt anything...and it does not seem to have on mine..been through 2 oil changes and no problems...I know its not much help but all I have to offer
