DARK SIDE
« on: May 16, 2006, 02:20:09 PM »

Ok, I have been reading about putting a car tire on the back of my "X" and I would like to do it :o. Could we get a tech session together to do this? I have a PepsX stand and a sears jack that I will bring to wherever the session will be held. I will also take off work to get this done.. I can't find a motorcycle shop to do it in this area!!  >:( Anybody know where I can get this done? Discount Motorcycle tire in Pasadena turned me down..  >:(    OK, I checked with Land's cycle's and they said they would do it for $60.00 labor.. Looks Like I'll be joining the DARK SIDE!!!   MMAMAAHHHHHHH  :o

I push my bike too hard to go with a car tire.  I hear you'll get good mileage though if you don't hit twistys aggressive.

I actually met a fellow biker on a vulcan in Orange ,Tx. He had a car tire on his bike, he said he did because he got tired of buying tires every 4 months, he had over 100k miles on his bike.

I recall reading an article or two about this.  Major problem is the flex in the sidewall causing the tire to fail or bead to break.  Second problem is the significantly harder compound.  Most folks are buying Avons for the stickiness.  The car tire application will never be considered "sticky."

Ride carefully!!!

How bout a low profile tire? That's what I was thinking, and Z rated for sure..

If you do a search for "car AND tire" on the VTXOA board you will find tons of stuff, including type and size of tire. One of the posts includes a link to a thread on the "Dark Side."

There is a pix of LaMonster hitting a curve on his Boss Hoss with his rear car tire.  Pretty cool photo.

Most of the posts do not include an "engineering" style discussion, just opinion and personal experiences.  I have read, but have been unable to find, articles on this issue.  They are not very supportive.  This is a controversial subject and your life and health are in the balance.  Do you have kids?  Is your insurance paid up?  Pre-need burial plan?  Whatever you decide, go for it and don't look back!!!! 8)

(Also, please ride behind me if you go with the car tire. :) ;) :D 8))

I'm going to do the same thing when my next tire goes.  I'm a BIG guy.  6'6" 400 lbs, and my rear tire wears out too fast.  I have read the BIG MAN threads here, and have determined that most of them go this way.

My pegs are forward and low, so I don't corner that aggressively.

I hear that the dark side has cookies, too.
