Gas mileage??
« on: December 06, 2006, 04:21:58 PM »

Trying to figure out what's going on:

Purchase 06 VTX1300R in June, all summer MPG was 42-48.
Now it dropped to 35-37 MPG.... :'(

  • Changed to synthetic oil at 4,000 miles (about a month ago)
  • did the pair valve thing (about 2 weeks ago)
  • put a K&N air filter on(last week)
  • added Cobra fatty bars(last week)
everything else is stock.

Is it just the cold weather?? :-\
Thanks in advance.

I did some of the same things But I did pipes and hypercharger. I was getting real bad gas mileage. but what had happend was my plugs were bad. I got new plugs and all better. now on the hwy at 90mph i get about 48 mpg. I have used cheap plugs and they go bad real fast on the 1300. So spend the extra money and they will last for a wile.

No jetting yet, I have the Dynojet kit Stage 1, didn't think I was going to need to install it yet.

I imagine that most of us who track mileage would report a decrease in the winter. That's certainly been the case with me.

Yeppers, lower MPG in winter.  For one thing, you are using the choke more.

Jerry :)

if you have a throttle lock, you only need to use the choke for about 2 sec. then lock the throttle and turn off the choke. (madco 101)

johnnycheese explained this to me once, but as usual 90% of it went way over my head.
it has to do with elevation, temp, humidity and the summer/winter gas you are running. it depends on how your bike is set up as to what happens on temp and humidity change. if you are running very effecient, then it will run poor when it gets colder and less humid, if your running to where you are effecient when its cold and dry, when it gets hot and steamy, it will run like crap.

My gas mileage stays about the same year round. Might drop a bit in cold weather.  8)
