I'd be with JM on that one. I still don't think people should pay three or four times for a vehicle.

Yep it's BS for sure...

I just bought a van wholesale at an estate auction for 800 bucks.  It needs 500 dollars worth of parts (not including labor) just to make it road worthy and needs 1800 worth of parts (not including labor) to make it good enough for my kids to ride in. Basically it's not a 'retailable' vehicle. But I have to pay tax on RETAIL value. What a f'n joke.  The van's presumptive value is over 3k.  So I get to pay tax on 3k, PLUS pay taxes on all the parts for my repairs plus pay for the parts themselves and do the repairs.  It's robbery in my book.  I don't mind paying some tax but not having an administrative (free) appeals processes for circumstances like mine is rediculous.

BTW - there is a way to challenge the presumptive value.  You have to get a written  appraisal from a dealer or an insurance adjuster.  The problem is they charge anywhere from 150 - 300 dollars to do them so it's not worth the cost or effort half the time.  (I am probably going to do it though just on principle, I'd rather give my money to a private business who will use most of it rather than give it to the gov't who will waste 80% of it)

ALSO.. keep in mind this was pushed and put in place by the Office of the Comptroller... aka - Carroll Keaton-Strayhorn, one tough grandma......

GRRRRRRR!!!!!

I'm not against teachers getting paid more. My problem is the correlation of property value to school taxes owed. What does the size/location of my house have to do with how much I should contribute to the education of this country's youth? I think a far more equitable solution is to have a base rate for every tax payer in a school district, and if you have children of school age, you pay more for each child. As soon as the kid graduates, your bill reverts back. We all benefit from an educated populace, but why shouldn't a portion of the bill be borne solely by the folks that are actually using the resource?

just my $0.02...  O0

It's probably to try and get more money to pay the teachers better.  Many are leaving.  There are so many punks kids today with parents that could careless so it's left up to the teachers to be their parent.  It's only getting worse.

yeah, you should be out here in the trenches. I've got a parent pissed because her kid got......wait for it.....a 90!!!!!

at least she cared. I failed some kids (how hard is it to fail band?) and heard nothing.

oh, and the 80% thing is real. even if they forget to ask you at the DMV they'll hold it up in process until you pay the full amount. and they'll just bill you until you pay up.  so don't buy anything that's worth much right now.

I have one class of 28 with 17 failing. Their parents don't return calls or notes, and basically the kids just don't do their work, then at the end of the 6 weeks want to know what they can do to get caught up. My answer...nothing, failure to complete assignments when they are due do not constitute an emergency on my part, complete your assignments by due date. If I decided to work only when I felt like it, I'd be fired.

For the record one was Gunmetal, which is a grey.  Although, it was so dirty it could have easily been mistaken for black so I'll let it slide this time.  :P

My wife reads a lot of newspapers on line and one of her favorites is a San Antonio paper. An article in it yesterday said taxes from the sale of said vehicles has really dropped. It seems every one has found a loop hole in the new law as it only applies to SALES. If the transfer is a GIFT there is NO TAX required or assesed. A great many has suddenly began getting GIFTS so that since Oct. 1st taxes collected on such sales/transfers has fallen far below that collected before Oct. 1st when the law took effect. Looks like Carroll Keaton Strayhorn's BIG TAX has backfired to the point that where people paid taxes on the honest amount paid before have revolted against this ripoff she put on us. Hasn't affected me as I haven't bought anything except from a new dealer in 50 years but I am ANTI TAX/PROTAX CUTS.
