Speedo Error
« on: October 29, 2006, 08:06:14 AM »

I just changed the rear end on my 1800 to a 1300 and boy does it jack up the speedo!! Anybody got an easy, cheap solution? I've seen the aftermarket electronic box (aint cheap) and the one Honda shop that I called said you can't do anything...any feedback would be apprecaited. i like the final drive gears and I must be getting better mileage but unless I am with someone else I can't really tell.

There is a company in Dallas that will adjust speedos on cars. I don't know if they can do scooters or not. They used to be located in the warehouse district over behind TI at 75 and 635. Don't recall the name. I tried to get out of a ticket by claiming speedo error once and was directed to them by 5-O

Get somebody to run radar shots on you at 30, 45, and 60 (indicated). Then you'll know what the actual error is, and can adjust your driving accordingly.

other option is to use a GPS unit. thats what i did when i changed to a lower profile tire. turns out that i'm almost 5 miles an hour fast, indicated 55mph= 50 mph actual. good luck.

There was a post on the national board a while back from someone who had made the 1800 to 1300 final drive switch. He indicated a speedo error of 5mph (55 shown/50actual) before and an error of 2.5 after the switch (52.5 shown/55 actual). If I recall correctly that was gps verified, if that helps any. You might do a search on the main board for that thread. Sorry, can't help on the correction device. Good luck, and congrats on the final dcrive switch, I hear it's a really nice mod.

i did this mod on my 03 1800c a year ago and by gps my speed is really close to spot on, was 5 mph before, and after, when going 70 it shows 70.5 to 71 mph, have run it by the radars at construction sites and it is usually on the money

Mine is about 10 off above 50 or so.  I've just got used to it.  It seemed to happen after I got the led's changed out for the speedo light.

So I'm assuming this gives you more top in.  Does anyone know exactly how much?  Do you really stop shifting from fifth to fifth?

well  i remember that I read at VTXOA.com back then.that someone changed to 1300 rear on 1800 bike.  the speedo is right on the money.   since the 1800 rear on 1800  is off by 10 Percent... .. but I could have read wrong.... ???

Yes I haven't shifted from fifth to fifth in a while LOL! I have to assume from basic logic that your top end would be higher but geeze! how fast do you want to go? :o :o :o I think from the totally un-scientific poll that I have taken that if you lined up twenty Xs that you will have a plus or minus of 5 to 10 % difference between them all.

My X was almost exactly 10% off at all speeds in 5th gear measured against the GPS.  When showing 80 was really doing 72.  Kept the tickets down.  Indeed, I never got one on the X.  Dusty now, well.....  He just lives in a speed trap.  For him the trap area is TEXAS.

As for the miles traveled - it was off also.  Each "mile" was actually slightly longer than 3/4 of a mile.  About a kilometer.  I often wondered if Honda simply changed the face on the speedo to show miles but left the inner workings to measure kilometers.

As Roseanne Roseannadanna said - "It's always something!"

I just GPS verified that I'm 17% slower than my speedo says on my '06 1300 with a Spec 3 1800 Neo FD.  Eek...  That's an extra 21 miles on my odometer for every 100 I do.   :o  :-\

You're welcome to try my GPS sometime if you'd like, as well.  Not perfect but you'd get about as good as someone gunning you with radar, I'm sure.

Well, I'm gonna try again tomorrow when the clouds are gone, should get a better reading.  But I think it's pretty accurate, unless all the cars really were going 100mph down I-35 today....
