Knock, clunk, tick...not sure how to describe this
« on: October 09, 2013, 09:31:36 AM »

So, I have noticed once in a while I feel a knock or some kind of thunk in the handlebars.  It kind of feels like a shock but it's really hard to tell.  At a stop I kept the front brake on then pushed and pulled to actuate the front fork shocks and there was nothing.  I am having a hard time figuring out if this is drivetrain, suspension or just something on the road transmitting through to my hands.  I don't hear anything either.  This 1800 only has a hair over 5000 miles so I doubt that bearings are the problem as well, they feel really tight.

It's not a problem, everything seems to work really good and it's probably just bumps in the road, I just wanted to check and see if there are any specific things I should check so that my wheels don't fall off.

Previous owner may have upgraded front springs in the forks.  I have read of people feeling a "pop" when using either the progressives or the goldwing upgrades.

He gave me a list of upgrades and I have the service records from the dealer.  No spring upgrades mentioned.  It doesn't do it very often, probably just stuff on the road.

rear shock bushings?

I will give it a look when I get home.  Could be something like that.  I would guess due to the miles on this bike bushings would not be the issue but you never know.

Stock bushings are crap!  I had to replace mine at about 6000 miles.

Ok, been reading up and apparently Honda revised the design.  The link that was posted is on a website that states on their home page that they are now out of business, not sure if the sub-site is tied to the business on the main "Home" page but don't want to sent $30+ to find out.  I am just going to check it out on my VTX later and if it needs to be replaced I will order the "new" ones from Honda.  If that doesn't fix it I will be looking for the McMaster Carr part number.

The best Cheap ones are the green ones off the "F" model.  $2.50 a piece and you will need 4 total.

I get back in town tomorrow, I have that number and might even have a couple of spares I can give you, let me check before you order some.
Not a big job if I have some and I think I do swing by and we can install them.

If the forks have been torn down before, it's very common for the "joint plate" to be re-installed at an angle on accident.  It will cause a popping sensation in the front end.  Might be something to look at.

It is my understanding that these are to keep the metal parts from rubbing against one another....the shocks and tires are the things that make the ride better.  I don't know how this would affect that but after reading a bit on it I think either would work wtih little difference on ride.  Of course....this would have to fit tightly or it could cause damage.  Anyone here running the "bearing"?

They have never been taken apart, at least not according to Honda's records and the guy I bought it from.
