Believe it or not, it's more efficient to have two lanes merge at the end, not drop down to one, and leave an open lane. The problem is that people are dickheads, and aren't capable of letting a car into "your" lane "ahead" of you.

I here ya, Snakebite. I don't have a problem letting someone in if they go about it in a nice way; put blinker on and wait. I do have a problem with those that try to force their way into your lane when you only have 1/2 a car length between you & the guy in front.
