bad engine/transmission noice at hwy speed
« on: April 08, 2012, 09:46:51 AM »

I'm experiencing a chucking / shearing sound when in 5th gear. It only happens when the road is bumpy or has undulations. As the bike moves up and down the noise shows up.
Sounds pretty awful while at hwy speed. Has anyone had this happen to them? Sounds like the trans is about the go.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

thanks for the quick response. but not being mechanically inclined where or what is the rear flange bearing?
is it part of the shaft that goes to the differential? would be costly to replace by a mechanic?

Thanks,
Malcolm

Just go to the VTXOA site and search for rear flange bearing. All kinds of threads about it.

Well i replaced the rear flange bearing and tit is still making the noise. I'm thinking now it maybe the universal joint linkage or something between the shaft and differential.
My option now is to take it in somewhere and have someone test drive to if they can determine cause.
Thanks for all the input. At least now my flange bearing won't need to be replaced for sometime. I just flipped over 48,000 miles so i'm sure there are lots of things i could do to the bike.
