Not Starting in Round Rock
« on: January 16, 2012, 10:12:54 AM »

All I know is it won't be the ground fix, did that or the battery, it is pretty new and had it load checked at the urging of the CA board. My new neighbor that opened a bike shop next door thinks starter based a video I made of how it was cranking. I will try and add the video, but doing this from my smart phone isn't any easier. And I don't know these icons above so I may need to add a video later tonight from the pc.

Ok I can't figure out from this phone how to add a video. Basically it cranks then stops and starts cranking and stops over and over. It use to still start up, now it just runs a fully charged battery down and fails to turn over.

Tonight I'll try posting the video.

I'd check the battery cables as well.  Make sure you use a socket and not a phillips.

Something else to look at is the starter solenoid.  I know several who have had to replace theirs (seems tied to how they wired up their accessories).

That is my usual MO, thanks for the reminder.

Any idea how to check the starter solenoid? That has crossed my mind as well.

I believe you can hook a meter to make sure it's not grounded out, but I'm not 100% sure.  Do you have a service manual?  If not, I can try and look to see if there is a diagnostic for that when I get home.

You might try searching for solenoid on www.vtxoa.com.  Big Larry over on the California board could probably tell you as well.

OK I do have a manual, I will have to refer to it to see if there is a way to check the solenoid. I was one of the original Calif members, so I'm familiar with him also. Thanks for the advice.

Just a guess, but see if you have arc burns on the starter switch contacts.

That has been my worry. Don't want to chase my tail replacing stuff that wasn't the root of the problem. So far it seems to me that it could be the starter, solenoid, or starter button. Figuring it out is what I am not confident diagnosing. On Sunday, when it is  perfect 77 degree riding weather, I'll be the idiot trying to figure this out.

The kill switch was my issue.

I had to replace mine, but it wouldn't even try and fire up.  The headlight would go off, but nothing would happen.  It sounds like he's at least getting power through.

The kill switch was my issue.

So it effected the cranking? Mine cranks then stops, then starts cranking again wiithout releasing the starter button.

I don't think it would crank if it was that, would it?

I know you just had the top end redone, could it be slightly out of time and not allowing the decompresser to function properly? the video you showed me is exacly what happens to my friends Harley when he forgets to engage the decompressors on start up.
