Need advice - rejet vs Scar mod
« on: November 30, 2011, 09:44:07 AM »

When I bought my X earlier this year, the original owner told me the bike was rejetted when the HK 3" Big Straights were installed.  The rejet was not done by him.  He didn't mention which jet kit was used, and I didn't think to ask.  I got the impression, based on how he talked about it, that he wouldn't know which kit if I had asked.

The X seems to run pretty strong on the high circuit, but the low circuit seems a little sluggish.  I have tried tweaking the A/F mixture in and out in 1/4 turn increments, and I have it set about as good as I can get it.

I have a stock air box with a K&N filter. I have been thinking about opening up the air box, maybe a decap.  With pipes only, you don't need to rejet, but is it mandatory with a decap, or can I get by with the Scar mod?   I understand this question may be tough to answer because I'm not 100% certain that it has been rejetted already, and if it has, I don't know which kit was used.

I am planning on attending the upcoming tech session at Steve's.  I've watched the video of the Scar mod, and it seems pretty straight-foward, but I would rather have someone with experience watching over to ensure I don't screw something up.  If a rejet is in order, I definitely need some help with that.

Thoughts?
All advice and/or guidance will be appreciated.

The air fuel screw setting is different as to the year model you have

Try setting the a/f screw out about 2 1/2 turns , then adjust from there

Jason said that he was going to be at the Tech Session  ( I think )

Thanks for the reply, Steve.
I replaced my A/F screw a while back with a Glen's permanent.  After I installed it, I initially set to 2.5 turns out (from lightly seated).  That setting seemed a little rich.  I turned it back in, then in a little more, then in a little more, then out some....I'm at about 2 turns out now.  That seems to be the best, but I still get a bit of low circuit bog....at just above idle.

With everything stock replacing the a/f screw

  '03  --------  1-5/8   turns out

  '04-'06  ----  1-3/4 turns out

  After  '07 --- 1 turn out

With non stock that is where it is any ones guess

Sounds like the needle to me.  We went through that with my bike and Ritchie's bike. You need to pop the top off the carb and see if he changed the needle or if he just used washers on the stock needle.  If he changed the needle see what notch the clip is on and try lowering the clip one notch. If stock needle with washers try adding a thin washer. (I have washers if you need them) Just my 2 pennies. :c
