The Dooley Project is Done!
« on: November 21, 2011, 10:09:37 PM »

Some of you know about the Dooleys I just put on a couple of weeks ago.  Here's what they look like with the shark fin tips that they came with.

The shark fins kind of started growing on me, but I loved the look of the slash cut tips and tried finding some on the 'Net with no luck. Then I scored another great deal on eBay of some Dooley mufflers and slash cut tips for a Yamaha.

So after receiving them, I put the slash cut tips on and realized that it made the overall length of the pipes shorter since the slash cut tips are shorter than the shark fin tips by about 3-5/8".

What I also realized with the new mufflers is that they were significantly longer than the C model mufflers (actually 8" longer without any tips on), and then I started comparing pictures of the Dooleys on the R/S models and also noticed that they were longer, too, than the C model.

So I decided to yank the C mufflers off and put the Yamaha mufflers on. Holding them up next to the C mufflers, I realized that the mounts welded to the mufflers were different.

Yamaha (left) vs. C (right)

The mufflers were a direct fit onto the header pipes, but I soon realized that the mounts were going to need to be modified for these to bolt up.

Left Mount

I was needing some 1/4" steel flat bar and remembered I had my supports that originally came with my bags still on the shelf in my garage, so I used those and cut what I needed from two of the supports. I attached them to the existing Dooley mounting brackets and marked where I needed to drill them.

Right mount

Left mount

...and the results...

The longer mufflers are definitely quieter than the shorter mufflers, but I still like the sound from them. Here's a quick video I shot today.

Not sure why y'all can't see them.  They're in a public folder on Photobucket's website.

Now, you just need to lower those bags.

Now, you just need to lower those bags.

That's gonna be tough to do with these bags.  I'd have to get different bags if I want to close up that space.
