Biker Down--This Time It Was Me
« on: April 24, 2011, 04:30:26 PM »

Laid it down yesterday while riding in Austin on Riverside Drive.  Still not exactly sure what happened.  I was doing about 30 mph in a slight left turn.  Some how the bike ended up leaning over farther than I had intended it to, and next thing I knew, the back end slid out from under me.  My left foot got caught under the bike, and I ended up dislocating my left ankle.  I didn't notice it at the time, but I also sustained a small break in my left collar bone.  Had I not been wearing all my protective gear, I'm sure I would have been hurt even worse, but the left sleeve of my web jacket slid up and allowed me to sustain some bad abrasions on my left elbow.  Although my ankle was reset at the hospital, the doctor told me I was going to need surgery later in the week after the swelling has gone down.  I don't know how much of a factor it might have been, but I had just put a new rear tire on the bike on Friday.

Surprisingly, the bike sustained very little damage, and my buddy Barry, who had been riding with me, was able to ride it back to his house without any problem.  The left rear turn signal was broken off, and both the left shock absorber and left highway bar were scratched up.  Those items will be easy to repair, but it looks like I won't be riding again for a while.

Nobody wants to have an accident, but I'm mostly just grateful that it wasn't worse.

Glad your ok and the old addage could have been worse.I have noticed with new tires at least the Avons are pretty slick for the first few days untill they are on the road a few miles.

:agree: Never trust a new tire for a few days until you get them scuffed up, especially on the edges! Now stop whineing, get back on and ride like hell!!!

Heal-up quick even though a dislocation will take a while.  The surgery will make it feel better but total recovery to where you feel like your old self may take a few months (have had a couple of athletes with dislocations).  Sorry to hear about this, but as everyone else has reaffirmed, glad it was not worse.

Glad you are ok. Collar bone can be a long slow heal, my son still complains about his collar bone it's been 2 years (snowboarding accident). Gald you were geared up, riding slow and had hwy bars. Hope for a speedy recovery.

Hey Mike, glad to hear it wasn't any worse. Sounds like you'll be back to riding in a few short weeks.
