Ignition Help?
« on: April 11, 2011, 06:21:53 PM »

I picked up my bike from a buddy's shop last weekend (he'd changed fork seals, battery, air filter & seat pin mod).  When I first got the bike I turned the key & nothing happened, I turned it off & back on, and everything was fine.  Then rode it to and from work a couple of times, and everything was fine.  The Friday, I took off on my trek to Fredericksburg and the bike died on me on the highway, it wouldn't start back up on the road, though it sort of ran like it was being push started when I noticed it was off.  So I pulled over, turned the key off and back on, and nothing, tried again, and it worked...  It seems like the key has to be in a specific spot (which I know it has to be turned to on, but this is more specific in the wiggle room you have once it's on) for the bike to run, and seems to get out of that position while I am riding.

Anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any advice?  I haven't taken anything apart yet...

Tighten your bolts on the battery.

It was a new battery, and connections were tight...  I checked them this evening.  I turned it on and wiggled the key and poked and pulled on wires, but could not replicate the problem.  I'll ride it to work and back tomorrow & put an hour of highway on it and see what happens...

Don't rely on a screwdriver. Use the 10 mm end wrench.

Put the pythons behind a wrench & threw a little grease on the terminal...  no mo problems (yet)...

Thanks Guys!  I didn't figure the battery, I was figuring a bad connection somewhere else...

Haven't had anything similar to that since I tightened the terminals back up.  Buddy said they used a wrench, not a screw driver, but may have rattled loose, said the same thing happened on another bike they'd replaced the battery on.

I drained the battery and blew a fuse jumping it off a few weeks ago, but that was my own dumb fault

Had the same problem sort of thought it was the radio in the fairing draining the battery looked into it and had a loose wire on the  neg. terminal so redid them all and starts up fine now.
