Just looking for some advice on a mc jack or lift - during the winter I would like to work on bike so need to know if a jack is good enough or get a stand along with jack - thanks

If you will be leaving the bike for an extended time, I would get a stand.
Not to say I have not left mine on the jack for a couple of days, but I wouldn't recommend it. 
By the way it should be pretty easy to borrow a stand if you don't want to buy one.

 I have a Larin motorcycle jack. It is the low one! I like it alot and does what I need. Got it at Tractor Supply! Have heard that the Sears M. Jack is real good to. As far as M. Stand the PepsX stand is the way to go even though I don't own one. He is a member here that doesn't post that makes them.

Unless you want to keep you bike on the stand for weeks at a time, you are welcome to borrow mine to do some work on your bike.  The weather around here is nice enough in the winter that we really do not have any down time.  I ride less in the summer here than I do in the winter.

PepsX is in Missouri City. If ya decide to get one of his stands (recommended) let me know, and I'll take ya to his place. He knocks a healthy portion off of the cost if you pick it up, and he doesn't have to ship it.

stay away from the sears red jack, the jack itself is good but the hydraulic jack is a POS!!!!

Some have not had a problem with the red Sears jack but most have.  I have the yellow one and it is great.  Northern Tool and Harbor Freight both sell a MC jack that I have been told falls between the red and yellow jacks from Sears.  I think that it is priced at about the same level as the red one sears.

I have a yellow sears jack and a Peps-X stand, best combo as far as I'm concerned. I am looking at the harbor freight lift table. There is a coupon in some bike mags that knock it down to around $270 - 280. thats what I want next.

I've had the red one for about 6 years. The only problem I had with it was that I have a tight area to work in. Once the bike is up, it would be out of position to have good access to both sides. I would have to move jack and bike to gain more room. After a while, my handle started beaking off where it is welded to the frame. I welded it back but the metal is thin and I'm not that good of a welder so it is breaking loose again. So, be gentle when moving the jack around, make sure the stablizers are up and keep them lubricated. They will rust/lock up. I too have noticed that the jack does leak down, so make sure you lock it in at one of the 3 positions. I always put mine on the highest position and wish I could have it higher. There is also a sweet spot that you can put the jack under the bike that allows you to have access to the oil filter and both oil drain plugs. A little to the left or the right and you are blocked to either the front drain or the filter. The stand helps a lot in giving more access. I also found that the red jack will go much higher than the stand. I started putting the stand under the bike and then placing some 2x4 blocks under the feet of the stand to gain another 1 1/2" of height.
As for riding, to me, winter here is better than summer for riding with Fall and Spring being the best. But, I am allergic to any temps. above 70*.

I most definately lock it down at the highest postion. The stand is next as I have noticed that although it is solid for some minor work I would not trust it for most of the work that needs some muscle behind it. When I get the cash gonna take Hicks offer and we going down to PepsX and pick one up, heard he gives a good discount that I'm hoping on.
