Wiring question
« on: June 08, 2010, 07:56:30 PM »

Question for you wrench heads. In this case, it is an electrical question. I'm installing a fairing on my bike. I'm installing the Kenwood KMR-440U. My question is regarding the power. There are two positives. I understand that the red wire is when you turn the power on, the stereo turns on. I'm installing a relay. I'm following the diagram below. My confusion is the yellow wire. I think this is the trickle power to maintain the memory presets. How should I wire this?

- Should I wire this directly to the battery?
- Should I wire this directly to the battery, but put a fuse in between?
- Should I not install the wire at all?
- What other options do I have?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You are right, it is the wire to maintain memory. You should have it fused but directly to the battery!

You really should install a fuse block and run everything off of it. Run a 10 gauge wire to it from the battery and run a dedicated ground wire with pigtails for everything you will tie into the fuse block. That way everything is neat, easy to trace, and you won't be sharing circuits if you have to troubleshoot.

technically the yellow wire is the more important of the two and draws your power to the HU, the wire marked ignition, normally called the ACC, for the keyposition, is merely signal to for lack of a better explanation keep the unit turned on, no real power draw. if you decide to install an external amp you will need to tap into the ACC wire for turn-on power. should be fused already via the ignition. hope this wasn't too confusing.
