Who is going to ride it? where is it going to be rode? Mostly what do you want it to do?
I have dirt bikes starting at 50cc up to 600cc they are for different riders and do different things. The term dirt bike covers a lot of different kinds of motorcycles.  Brand name has little to do with it as most brands cover many types of bike.

The best bike I have owned for general use in the way of a dirt bike, was my old Honda XL 250 it was a early 80s model, I don't recall the year. It would not compete on the track but it was light enough to throw around yet it had enough grunt to climb without worrying about that finicky 2 stroke power band.
Most bikes are 4 stroke these days and have much better shocks. I now have a Kaw KLR it works for the places I ride but it is to tall and heavy for mountain riding. I do recommend that you get a bike that can be street legal for the (head light) and occasional road use.
GasGas is the only modern trials type bike I have rode, I never owned one but for mountain riding I think it would be good.

VTX, Offroad? You guys are brave.
My first motorcycle was a mid 70's Yamaha Enduro.
I had a blast on that thing. Used to ride it to school
then on the way home, hit the trails.
Looked pretty much like this one........
