odd front tire wear..
« on: January 26, 2010, 12:50:35 PM »

was doing my weekly inspection and clean up of the bike and noticed the front tire is wearing more on one side of the centerline of the tire than the other?? if you are sitting on the bike its the left hand side of the tire. my only thought was perhaps the 5 deg crown that is built into roads to keep them drained might be the cause of the uneven tire wear??? any of the gang noticed this or may know whats up. and even more important what to repair if it is something wrong on the bike ??? Bike seem to ride fine and straight. nobody  riding behind me has mentioned the bike tracking funny. it's time for a new tire anyways. just was wondering what gives ???

thanks in advance
Rick

There are 100's of debates out there about this subject. Bottom line no one really knows, but it's common.
Since I went to Dynabeads I haven't noticed it as much. Still there just not as much.

That discussion was going on in 2003 when I joined up. I know from experience that running low air pressure will speed up the wear of the tire. Also, some tires are softer than others and the softer ones cup faster than the harder tires. That's my 2 cents.   :deadhorse:

I wonder, if that on the other side of the world the tires wear out on the right side. kinda like toilets flush clockwise here and counter-clockwise there.

[ :ohwow:  Crown in the road is my bet!!!   That is the same reson you can drag pegs in a left turn than you can on a right turn !!!  Ride safe ride long.   :redcard: :agree: :stick.    I like icons!!!  poke:/color]

I don't drag pegs...I pulverize them.

Seriously though, the crown probably has something to do with it.  In a car you're level with the road.  On the bike you're typically straight up while the road banks a tad.  After several thousand miles why wouldn't it be worse on one side?  It's always banked the same way regardless of which side of the road you're on.

:redcard:If you have two lanes going the same way it is still high in the center. So if you ride in the left lane, the fast lane it will ware more on the right side of the tire.   Most travel is done in the right lane.   Ride safe ride long.   Just keep it on the road :bikerider:

Metzler tire?   that happened to me with a metzler. running E-3s now, watching the air pressure hasn't shown up so far.
