1300 Stearing Stem Bearing Questions
« on: January 04, 2010, 01:26:08 PM »

I know that some people out there in X-Land have done swap outs with the Ball Bearing Stem Bearings on 1300's for the 1800's Tapered Bearing Stem Bearings.

Questions are;

- Why, does it improve handling? Any other reasons?

- Also, is it a direct change out for the bearing and race or is there any modification needed to the Stearing Stem or Frame?

- Are there any special tools needed to do the job.?

The stock ball bearings are cheap. My schwin bike had better. Also mine were put in at an angle so I was cupping tires in 3,000 miles.
The alls balls bearing are direct replacments, no mods needed. Gives a lot firmer and more secure feel to the front end. IMHO
The job can be done with out the recomended tools, but I wouldn't want to try it. Best to find some one that has the tools and borrow them from him. There are a couple good write ups on the OA about doing this.

Larry,
There are a couple of people here in the Houston area that have the tools...Cybrhick is the first one that comes to my mind.  I replaced my steering head bearings (with Cybrhick's help) this past fall.  My bike had developed the dreaded "1300 wobble" and replacing the bearings dramatically improved my steering stability.   As Jerry stated, it is a direct replacement...you just need the tools.

Connie,

Can you tell me what tools were needed to do this bearing change out?

Thanks in advance.
