slack in foot break pedal 1800 vtx retro
« on: August 10, 2006, 11:57:10 AM »

Has anyone had to adjust the slack in the foot break pedal ?
I have a bit more slack in mine than I would like . I have change break fluid ,
I do not have a vacuum pump so I did it using the pump- pump
loosen / tighten - drink beer  pump-pump loosen tighten method.
I thought Changing the fluid would  take some of the slack out of the break but it still seems to have a little more travel than I would like. any suggestions ?

Is it slack or is it a squishy feel?  You might have some air in the line.   :-\

If you can pump the pedal and it gets more firm (less slack) then you still have air in the lines. Bleeding that rear brake is tricky.

If it's firm then check to make sure all the linkage is tight (the pivot bolt s tight in the bracket and has the locknut on the back).

If that's not it either then it's probably just normal play.  You can raise the pedal a little using the adjustment bolt on the master cylinder which might make it feel better to you.

I broke down and bought a vacuum pump. I pumped a little more fluid out of all three of the bleeders for the foot pedal .
When I step on the pedal it goes down and stops about 1/4" from my hwy bar on the first push and about 3/8" on the second and third pump. I think I have air traped somewhere ,maybe the banjo fittings ?
any suggestions ?

A trick that has worked for me in the past is to be very gentle when bleeding the brakes, when you do it manually.  A few easy pulls to pump up then hold slight pressure when opening the alimite.  I was helping my brother to install SS lines on his bike and we fought it for hours trying to get the air out of the line.  I kept trying to use as much pressure as I could and it wasn't working.  Then I decided to try it gently and it worked.  The brakes were bled in just a few minutes.  Hope this helps.

Make sure you're doing everything in the right order.  Left front caliper link (of rear), right front caliper link (of rear) and then the rear caliper.

Ok I'm back after the trapped air in the break lines. Had a slight complication
I was lifting my motorcycle lift by the pipe jack handle ( its a Sears alum. lift )and the handle popped out dropping the jack on my foot, boy that smarted.Foots swollen up & turned black & blue( Ouch !!!)   I can walk on it now so back to the breaks .I will try the vacuumed pump 1st and see if that does the trick .

Make sure you're doing everything in the right order.  Left front caliper link (of rear), right front caliper link (of rear) and then the rear caliper.

Hey Robdog - in the above example - which of the two above is on the same side of the bike as the rear caliper?  May sound like  a stupid question but with out going into Details - that answer would help with an  ongoing problem.

The rear caliper is on the RIGHT side of the rear wheel. So the Right front caliper is on the same side as the rear caliper and the same side as the front AND rear master cylinder.

Is that what you're asking?
