Interesting Day
« on: December 30, 2009, 07:40:01 AM »

A couple of weeks ago, before Christmas, I was riding home, minding my own business, when something interesting happened.

There was a white extended cab, early 2000 model, Dodge pickup that passed me on the loop in Tyler.  In and of itself, wasn't that weird.  Except, I drive a little faster than most on the loop because I'd rather be in control and be able to respond.

The different thing is that he passenger was hanging his arm out of the window in a 1 finger salute.

I didn't know what I had done to this guy, and thinking back to High School when we flipped the bird at our friends for fun, I thought, "Do I know you?"

I started thinking, "Did I cut him off?"

No.  I hadn't passed him.  Everybody that I switched lanes in front of had been a vehicle that I had passed.  There wasn't much of a chance that I had cut this guy off.

I turned on my blinker to turn off of the loop and head on home, and Dorkfish slammed on his brakes and turned into my lane about 3 cars ahead of me.

Now I'm thinking, "Well, I haven't been in a fight in a while."  Followed surprisingly by, "This might be fun."

There were 2 guys in the truck, but my advantage was leather padding and a helmet.

My only worry at this point was weapons.

I continued on my way.  My MP3 player was on and I had no way of communicating with this guy unless I stopped and switched off the music.

He took the turn lane at the next intersection and I kept driving.  The next thing I knew, he was passing me again, passenger hanging out the window in a "What's up?" position.  Hands extended like he wanted a hug.

So I gave him the head nod.  "What's up with you?"  His lips were moving, but I couldn't hear what he was saying.  Probably a good thing.

The next intersection, he again took the turn lane and I stopped at the light.  My position allowed a rearview look at the truck and an opportunity for a mid-intersection fight.

At the first sign of an open door, I was prepared to drop my kickstand and stand my ground.

The light turned green.  I went on my way, and I'm assuming that Dillweed turned.

Afterwards, I was slightly relieved.  I am sure I don't have the stamina needed to fight 2 guys anymore.  College was a lifetime ago.

Have any of you guys received any "non-provoked" aggression from cagers?

maybe they just wanted to check you bike out....  Is hard to say since you could not hear what they were telling you...  I think you did the right thing by going on about your day.

Flipping the bird at me would not have been a great introduction.  "Hey, nice bike."  Would have been good.  Or a thumbs up.

I've noticed some family trees don't have any branches. These are usually the ones that start crap just to start it.

There are a lot of squirrels out there. More than a few are are eaten up with the "Billy Badass Syndrome" and they look for trouble. When you encounter them, try to avoid engaging them; you are in for grief whether you win the fight or lose it. And if you lose, you might be in for more punishment than a simple Cranberries-whuppin'.

A few weeks ago I was on my way home from work at about 10:45pm. I was crossing the SH242 San Jacinto River bridge at the speed limit (60) on cruise control; I was the only vehicle on the bridge. About halfway across I saw headlamps approaching from behind at a very high rate of speed. Until the vehicle got close I assumed it was a LE vehicle on a hot run. As it neared I saw it was all over the road; pretty scary on a bridge. It passed me at well over 100mph; it was a ratty 97 F-150. As it blew by I blipped my siren and the driver slammed on the brakes. I could see that there were two people aboard. When all the driver saw was an unmarked Dodge pickup, he took off again, all over the road. Since I was unmarked, off duty (and not wearing a uniform), and outside the city I got on the radio and tried to get someone to set up a stop in a marked vehicle. The registration came back to a Porter address off of FM 1314. I followed him at speeds ranging from 85 to well over 100; he turned south onto 1314 and was passing vehicles in curves and construction zones. He put several vehicles on the shoulder. The only unit free was a sheriff's deputy way down 1314 near 59. She was coming our way but was a long way off. The truck finally turned off 1314 onto a side street. The deputy told me that was the neighborhood he lives in and that she was still a long way off. I figured that no one got hurt and the clown made it home this time, so I turned around and resumed my trip home. The clown turned around and started after me.

How many of you would chase someone who might be a cop when you've been driving stupid?

We were on a two-lane blacktop through the woods, and he was trying to get around me. My guess is that he was going to try to force me into the ditch. I had Stephanie still coming and a deputy constable had cleared a call and was set up at the next intersection ahead, and I was blocking this clown from getting around me. About two miles before we got to the intersection where the deputy constable was staging the F-150 broke off and turned around. The constable went after him, but didn't find the truck. Now, I had a 1911 on my hip, a good bright light in the door pocket, and a 10 1/2" AR15 with a mounted light and a holographic sight that deploys really well from inside the truck. I didn't want to take them on -- I have no idea what they had and I certainly didn't want to read the months of headlines about the out-of-control off-duty cop terrorizing (or killing) innocent citizens for no reason that the turds' attorney would have been feeding the media. But it's really scary that there are so many people out there who are so eager for a confrontation. You didn't have a radio and I doubt you had the kind of firepower I had at my disposal; why take on an unknown double threat under those conditions? I arrested a guy once who pulled a pistol on another driver for taking too long to go when the light turned green, and chased the other driver right past us. He never did understand that he was the bad guy in that incident. You don't want to mess with idiots like that; they are more trouble than your pride is worth. Steer clear of the troulemakers if you can. If you can't, do whatever it takes (within reason) to protect yourself.

Very solid advice hipshot.  Raymond, I am glad that you got out of that situation with only a slightly ticked off mood....you have two beautiful girls at home that need their daddy coming home to them in good shape everyday.

Yep. You didn't see some defense prostitute on the news ranting about how I was an out-of-control, badge-heavy, Rambo wannabe making unjustified, illegal off-duty arrests of poor, innocent citizens minding their own business outside of my city, did you?

That game isnt over yet !!!!   LOL justice has a way of getting served in due course.. that arse is going to be watched each time he steps foot on the streets you guys patrol and he will get his due... Just a matter of time.. ;D I am going to sit back and wait for the rest of the story..

Glad everthing worked out and no fight took place.. I am scared to death of the next guy while on my bike. I am going to lose the fight already simply cuss i am on two wheels and unprotected. Many a time I have thought of the concealed weapons permit and sticking one in my riding vest just to even the odds a little. Surprise !!!!!   LOL  :couch:
