« on: September 08, 2009, 06:15:29 PM »

I went to the local honda dealer today for some basic maintenance stuff. I bought an 05 VTX 1800 on Saturday it has 8500 miles on it at another used bike dealer. I have no service history so I decide to change all fluids air filter spark plugs my self drop about 170.00 for everything then I am told I need to do a Valve adjustment which they can do for 220.00 what the heck also informs me I have to do this every 8K is this right

Yes... Every 8k the valves need to be done. Get yourself a service manual, all this info is in there.  O0

Me too!  I just did mine yesterday (17,000 miles) and all but one were too tight.     :agree:  with the above, mileage is relative.
Don't give them that kind of money when you can do it yourself, if you have a few hours.  Go to the VTXOA board or the californiavtxriders, also bareasschoppers and you can print everything.  This is what I did for some self-direction.

Is that what they are calling it these days?  ;)

Look for a local VTX X Riders tech session in your area. We use to do them in Houston, but I've been out of the loop for years so don't know if it's still a common practice.

b-rad you can go to www.vtxoa.com and there is a link to the download for both the 1300 and 1800 manuals.

TR, Just something to mention the Spark Plugs probably do not need to be replaced at that mileage, maybe just examined and cleaned unless they look real, real bad. IMHO
