well I got back on the bike and left Academy's and   no speedo
odometer and trip still working fine  edit: trip/odometer was on but it didn't increase mileage while driving anymore, checked speedo connectors under tank they looked good so rode on home


went checking out speedo/ speed sensor as per the manual and shur'nuff the sensor no worky

I've got 12V comming in, good continuity on the ground, but no spiking voltage when the wheel turns just a steady 4.6V or so


Anybody got an extra one? could really use one by Thursday
I guess I'll be calling around tomorrow trying to find one

looks like you can find used ones on ebay for around 30 bucks
but I went ahead and got a new one ordered for about $96 shipped

guess I could of just ordered three used ones

Oh well I'm a little slow on the draw, I had one from a insurance claim, just read the thread. It got replaced but I see nothing wrong with it.

well I put on the new speed sensor and IT WORKS! 

the speed sensor's part# for a VTX 1300 is
37700-MCV-003
but that doesn't include the new o-ring that you're supposed to install with it, I reused the old one since I forgot to order one

I haven't researched... but where does the VTX get it's speed? 

I took mine out tonight with the GPS and my speedo is WAY off.  At 72mph GPS, the speedo says 80mph.

these bikes are notorious for the speedo being off, I don't ever recall hearing of anyone's being very accurate. the more important factor is how far the odometer is off. several years ago, honda was slapped with a lawsuit concerning their car odometers. they were reading higher mileage than actual mileage thus rendering persons mileage warranties no good way to early. Honda had to pay back alot of money because of this. nothing was ever brought up about the motorcycle odometers though. there are a few companies that make a speedo correction device.

BTW, with the 1800 gear set i was getting 106 miles on my odo for every 100 miles actually traveled, per my gps.
after i switched to the 1300 gear set i'm getting 91 miles on my odo for every 100 miles actually traveled.

just some food for thought.

to answer your question, the speed is taken at the tranny output shaft. the sensor is located at the back of the crank case/ tranny case near the driveshaft.
