Transmission and/or Clutch help
« on: July 10, 2009, 01:32:30 PM »

I need some advice from the gear heads on the board. I have a 2005 VTX 1300R with 9500 miles. About two weeks ago my  X is a little harder to shift. It does not matter if I’m shifting up or down. When I shift, I feel like a small click and then it goes in to gear, it does not matter what gear it is, or what speed I’m going. Down shifting is the same. When the bike warms up, it is not as bad, but there is still a click.

I have tried pulling the clutch almost all the way and playing with it thinking I may need to adjust the clutch, but I still have the same problem. What advise do you give?

•   Adjust the clutch. Should I tighten or loosen up a little?
•   Change the transmission fluid.
•   Take it in to the stealer and have them check the clutch and transmission
•   What other thing do you recommend that I should do?

two things:
First, the transmission oil gets changes when you change the engine oil. It all the same oil.  :t
second, take it down the street to Johhny Cheese's place and have him look into it. But I think your situation sounds normal.

Don't worry. Someone will pop in here with what's really going on.  :stickpoke:

You know, someone who knows what the heck they're talking about.  ;D

I don't care what other people think. They don't do it very often!
Of Course it's dirty. It's hard to clean when the tires keep moving.

Hey alex, this is an all to common problem with th R models. more specifically with the heal/toe shifter. these need to be cleaned and lubed periodically or they start to gum up and do exactly what you are describing. some even get so bad as shifting becomes almost impossible. you read about this quiet abit on the national board. try cleaning and lubing before you take it to the dealer or tear down the tranny. I would be willing to bet it's just dirty. good luck and lets us know what happens.

There are several things that can cause the problem you are having.

Out of the manual;

Improper clutch operation

Incorect engine oil viscosity

incorect clutch adjustment

and several problems with shift linkage, could be gumed up or some how it could have gotten bent,

and other internal parts (You probally do not have any of these).

On first thought clutch adj. most often the cause, or wrong engine oil.

Clutch free play should be 3/8-13/16 in. Try the upper adjustment first,if you can't get proper free play,go to the

lower adjustment.

Also check the lower cable for fraying. If it is frayed change the cable, before it breaks.

Luckys Lover, I was unaware that the engine and transmission share the oil. Crewsn, thanks for the tip, I’ll go over to the national board and check it out.

I changed the oil this weekend, she was overdue. That defiantly helped, but she still has the click and then goes in to gear. It is very light, but it’s still there. I’ll look in to Crewsn’s recommendation. I’ll give a progress report later on.
