Lane Splitting
« on: March 25, 2009, 08:43:21 PM »

Looks like lane splitting may become legal in Texas in the near future.
Just saw a story about it on the Austin news.

The rules would be...
1. Not allowed unless traffic is moving 20 mph or slower
2. Can not go faster then 5 mph above the flow of traffic
3. Must wear a helmet.

We'll see if it passes...

Not sure it is a good idea, you never know when someone will turn into your lane as it is.  :ohwow:

I wouldn't do it. Too many dumbazzes out there that would be not paying attention, talking on the cell, or pissed that you were getting ahead of them. If the tools speed up or slow down now to block you when you are in a cage, what are they gonna do when you are on two wheels?

When I lived in Arlington, my home was very close to Rangers Stadium. If it was game day,
Collins was a disaster. The lanes were fairly wide and with traffic at a stand-still, I had no
problem driving between lanes. My speed was at best 10 to 15 mph because I did not want
to become a statistic. I would never even consider this on a freeway.

Since Austin is really an extension of CA, I won't be surprised if it passes, but, I'm with Jeff, not me, not there, NO WAY!  :bikerider:  :ohwow:

I did it in California is not that big deal, I don't know about the MPH they are wanting to do it, we were doing faster than that, I was on an Ultra classic and Martin was on an Goldwing.  It does save a lot of time.  Drivers in California are used to it so it is easy to do there... If it passes here in Texas (which I don'think it will) I know some people will die before drivers get the idea.  Good thing some people are expendable...

As it stands now, its NOT illegal to do it anyway.  I already do it in heavy traffic, never had a problem.

Edit:  Forgot the NOT in original post.

It's made for traffic.  Cali riders split even at full legal speeds which is...not good.  That's where I could see someone getting seriously hurt here.  Houston drivers aren't the nicest people on the planet.

Divided on whether I would want to see it passed.  One part of me thinks that it is too dangerous to do, but yet having that option would be nice.  I do not plan on practicing it, but then again I do not choose to ride without a helmet, but am glad that that option is there for people to decide for themselves.

Lane splitting, No way.
Not for me. I lived in California for years and saw what happens when a door opens.
Not a nice thing.

I would like to have the option too....especially blocked in a jam on a 100 degree day in Summer....hopefully the drivers on their cell phones will be able to hear the pipes as I pass by them carefully, in a "crawling" speed.  :-\
