OK, I need help again. Bike won't start.
« on: February 23, 2009, 08:19:55 PM »

I got on it this morning and it just won't start. The fuel pump whines, the headlight goes out when I push the start button but nothing happens.

I cleaned the starter switch contacts and even jumped the cleaned contacts. I got sparks when I jumped the cleaned contacts. Once to get the headlight to come on and the second time to hopefully get the starter to come on. Sparks but no starter.

I put the switch back together and it seems to be working correctly. But I'm not even hearing the relay clicking at the battery area. I'd like to trouble shoot this in time to take it to Round Rock this weekend. HELP!!

Of Course it's dirty. It's hard to clean when the tires keep moving.

Here's my .02...If you haven't already done this, go do a ground fix.    There are several places that have been grounded to the frame and when they put these on, they did it right over the paint and didn't get down to the bare metal.  Take the screw/bolt out and sand/file/scrape the paint off the frame and put it back on.  Use some grease on there to keep the rust down.

You might do a search here on ground and get some results that have a better explanation of how to do this.  I did it about 3 yrs ago, so can't remember where all those places are to do the fix.

Put your kickstand up silly! Wait, I only get newbies with that one right Gumbo!  :t I would definetly check the ground. Also make sure the battery has the juice to turn the motor over. Might even check the switch on the kickstand just to make sure it hasn't crapped out. Not sure if there is a relay in the starter circuit, but could double check that, and last but not least check the starter itself. :c  If it ain't that call Jim! :couch:

When it happened to me it was a dead battery.  Both times.  Tried all the fixes, none worked.  New battery did.  Exact same symptoms.

Do you use a battery tender?

Good luck.

Talk about beating a dead horse  :boxing:
Wonder if it had anything to do with putting that wet air filter on  your bike.  ???

Happened to me once... Exactly how you describe. The ground cable connecting to the battery was about 1/4 turn loose. I had no idea how much that could affect it...

i was having that problem with my 1800c and turned out to be the started button. bad contact and designed to wear out. 15 bucks and it fixed it. My headlight was going out and staying out even after new high output halogen light bulb. So it might be that started button. Dealer can test it for free or if you have a voltmeter i think that will do the trick

It starts when you jumper the solenoid contacts. More troubleshooting to do but first I need a battery for my test meter. Never fails, does it? I looked on the BIG board and have some tips from another dead bike. LOL I'll let you know what I find out.
