Fuel pressure regulator
« on: February 16, 2009, 12:54:01 PM »

Anybody done this? Looks too easy. I'm wondering if there are any of those "little" things I should know before attempting it. Can't affort to have it fixed after I fix it... :cantbelieve:

Is that the flying saucer looking thing that has a diaphram in it and one hose on one side and what looks like a tiny allen wrench sticking out the other side?

Part number 17238-MCH-003? Had a mechanic tell me about a year ago that he was starting to see a lot of the earlier model VTX's starting to have problems with those.

If so, make sure it's not just a split hose sucking air. I got one if you are in a bind.  :c

As for as changing it, I don't have a clue, just bought it incase.

Thanks Bill,

Had a mechanic friend of mine do all the testing and it's definitely the diaphram in the pressure regulator. Already got the parts ordered. After doing some research, I found that it's true about the older VTX's, (1800 only), starting to have this problem. Mine's a '03 C model with 65,000 miles on it.

Now I'm going to check the hoses too...

Our next beer is on me... :c

Would you replace the hoses if you are replacing this thing?  Seems like it would be a good idea.

Yep, ordered the hose and the o-ring.

Hipshot....I still haven't looked up the supersized one I had to see what it goes to. Glad hobo didn't take me up on the offer to send it to him when his went out. He might have gotten a tad  :ohwow:  :cuss: at me after waiting to get it and then discover that I had sent him the wrong part.  :couch:

I think it's still in my truck, just out of curiosity I'm gonna get it and look it up. I'm betting it goes to a RUNE.

I looked up the super sized part I have. I couldn't find it so I did the REVERSE search by putting in the number. The answer was, it's a diaphram, well duh, but it doesn't tell you for WHAT! I'm done with it. The number is 17238-MCH-003 if anyone needs one, I got it. Just don't know what it fits.  :banghead: :cuss: :banghead:

Parts came in and I immediately got the flu so things got delayed.  ::)

I ordered the o-ring but the part had one on it when it came in.

Today I drained the gas and oil from the crankcase, put the new regulator on and cranked it up. Seems fine. I'm going to ride tomorrow and see if everything goes well.  :)

Sorry to hear about you getting the flu Mike. I have two tips for ya, stay away from kids and drink at least two wiskeys a week.  :c

I rode yesterday to run the gas out of my tank in preperation for putting on my new regulator that's suppose to come in today. As soon as I got back I raised the tank and pulled the hose off to see if it was wet with gas. It was bone dry. I'm going to change the thing out anyway, looks to simple not to. Although I havn't looked to see where the other end of that hose goes.  :ohwow:  I have to take the breather off too don't I?  :banghead:

Hope you are feeling better  :c

Thanks Dr. Bill. I'm feeling much better now. That was two BOTTLES a week wasn't it? For preventative measures, I've increased the prescription. I'm still working on getting the sign in the yard to keep the kids away... ;)

You don't have to remove the breather unless there's gas and oil in it and you need to replace the air filter. Just raise the tank and replace the regulator. One of the bolts is hard to get to, but even I managed to get it done in less than 12 beers.   :c

Today, I ride for a while and see if it worked.
